2017 V6 cam timing cover oil leak = full engine out repair

Just a heads up/ FYI: I was installing my Mobtown Hidden front hitch system on my 2017 Tacoma 4x4 TRD V6 DC w/30K miles on it over the weekend and noticed an oil leak on the right side of the motor around the PS pump and all over the skid plate when I dropped it. Naturally I Googled it and came to find some other complaints of this here on this forum. I headed over to the Dealer today to report it and sure enough they found a pin hole in the cam timing cover gasket leaking the oil.

The procedure is a full engine out repair! 5 days of work. Keep an eye on the right side of the motor and report leaks ASAP. This would cost a fortune if it was out of warranty!

This truck has been cursed as it also already had the entire cab wire harness, headliner, floor mats, sound deadening and rear seats replaced due to the center cab brake light gasket leaking since new causing mold under the whole rear of the truck (7 month job due to lack of parts availability).

Uhhhggg!!!

 

Jeez I'd be pissed with that truck!!

 

I've read that it's close to $1,800 job.

Thanks. Yea I find those folks funny. I think the whole point of forums is for members to share experiences with the community to help others out and create a knowledge base. Hopefully someone will peak at thier motor and catch theirs leaking before the warranty runs out or find these posts when Googling an issue they come across. The book calls for 32 hours of labor on the job. Don't let the Dealership side step this one! At least the recovery bar install went well!

 

Yeah, seems to be more and more common. Mine leaked for 60kish miles before trading it in. I caught it right after my extended warranty expired, so i never fixed it. Rear main seal was leaking too

 

5 Days?? Weren't they doing complete frame swaps in 5 days ??

 

2 days for me, just remove front diff. get er done.

Dear old Dad made a good living as a young mechanic. Commonly was paid for 60 hrs, as much as 80, based on flat rate, because he was good. Learned or invented shortcuts to the 'book', fabricated special tools to speed the job, yada yada.

When I say good, not just fast, but with quality. In those days you often met the shop mechanic (even at the dealer) and he had many folks ask for him by name, willing to wait until he was available if need be.

When he had down time between jobs he 'worked' to get ready for common jobs he knew would come his way.

 

It pays 13.2 warranty, its a tech killer. The worst part is cleaning the silicone off the old parts. 5 days is for unexperienced techs.

I can murder some flat rate times though, while keeping quality up.

I will be taking my truck in for resealing the front timing cover/housing.
Was told 2 day job. Tech that does a lot of these said this has
been an issue for years with Toyota. The heads don't match up with
the block so they have to "pack" silicone in those joint areas. I bought the
extended warranty so am covered there.

Also have a rattle on cold start which I believe is the catalytic
converter on the driver side, anyone else??? When I hit it with my
hand it definitely rattles.

Also have what sounds like a pulley bearing noise on cold start.
Can't hear anything after about 30 or so seconds. Not sure
if it does it while driving, too much noise. So will be getting
those 2 things addressed also.

When I had it in for a service a couple weeks ago for the bearing type noise
the service writer told the tech to check T-SB-0316-17: Knocking Noise From Vacuum Pump.
If you read it mine did not qualify but they did the TSB anyway which did not fix the
problem. $700 for the pump, ouch

 

This Spring I bought a New Taco that "listed" for $32K. In today's repair cost market I did buy an Extended Warranty from the dealer ... ~ $900. Yes I know ... May never use it , but if you need it it can cost big. I figured it was about 03% added cost .... Take you Pick ... Sorry for those with the leaking cover ....

 

So bullshit walks. My back is fubar right now so I decided to take the motor out instead of the rack/front diff.

It's a big process to get out, about 3-4 hours of hard fast work, all 3 manifolds had to be removed on truck. It's gonna take me probably 16 hours said and done. I'll take a pic of it disassembled tomorrow.

Do you guys know if this is a rare problem, or most 3rd gen v6 tacomas will eventually succumb to?
