Tundra rack has to be machined so the stroke of the cylinder matches the tacoma. So custom rack. Then you have to modify the frame so it accepts the tundra rack. Requires cutting old mounts and welding new ones. Think you have to modify the steering linkage too. Not sure if the fittings are direct bolt on.

People replace with stock ones up to this point. Have heard a rack a year for some.

Really only a few total options:
-tundra rack upgrade. (Baskibiker on the site, solo motorsports, and marlin crawler offer upgraded racks)

-replace yearly and hope for the best

-there is a “truss” kit coming to brace the rack to keep it from flexing which is the presumed cause of the issues (mainly for long travel go fast guys, but the rock drawer guys are having issues). this does require modification as well and may be apart of a larger engine/diff cradle.

Dont knowing seals will hold up but I have always used psc steering pumps.
    More pressure easier steering.
Or some sort of hydro steel cylinder to help the rack along.

I don't know. There are guys out there alot smarter than me and if they can't come up with a solution there might not be one.

So the “truss” kit in the works has the ability to run a hydro assist.

some have converted to a full hydro setup which is technically only ideal for trail use only. more details here https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...nk-and-37s-build.342018/page-53#post-22855474

@tgelata had a good idea about converting it to an older style steering that gets rid of the rack and uses a box with a pitman arm setup (I’m screwing up the terminology I’m sure), which is another idea.

Thanks for the link. From a point of reliability for a "overland" type of truck its too much.
For a pure "toy" to drive to trails and back its ok
but the best of both worlds I can see a sas would make more sense

maybe put a tacoma body on a LandCruiser frame and running gear. Solid axles, No rack and strong.....
I hope I never get to the rack bridge....untill then I'll just have to be rally careful If i ever get to go wheeling......

Plenty of solid axle converted Tacoma’s. A upgraded rack isn’t anything compared to, just the availability of parts is the issue. Nice to go to a parts store for a bearing or hub for your One ton front axle from a F250.

Most owners take dirt roads and Subaru friendly trails (Subaru Forester did Minden Hydro line, that's like 3/5 aka 33" tire Tacoma level).
People that destroy racks usually do plain carnage, it hurts to watch more than participate in it for many.

You should come with me on a trails one day, you'll experience first hand how things fail and stop asking those questions :D

I'm good luck. Your truck will run perfect with me there. No carnage.
