There are lots of aftermarket racks available that are much more usable and not a lot of extra money. From what I have seen and read, the OEM rack is more for aesthetics than anything. I needed something that could carry a 2nd spare and traction boards, the spare alone exceeded the weight limits of the OEM rack.

Your spare weighs over 100 pounds? It's a light duty rack for sure, but that's all that some people require. And it's SUPPOSED to fit the truck.

Yes, it’s too bad it doesn’t fit, but read up on the issues people have had with them with actual use. No, the spare weighs 70lbs, without any mounting gear (E Load), I was told by the dealer the OEM Tacoma rack is rated for 75lbs, it looks like they advertise it as good for 100. I still would never mount anything of weight on it and feel confident that it would stay up there.

The roof rack is all about aesthetics, much like their Predator rails. Their photos of the rack in use in their brochure are a joke, I hope no one actually ties up their kayak like they show and tries to drive anywhere. Buyer Beware!

Oh, I know there have been problems with it. BUT, for someone who just wants to mount relatively light stuff up there it works just fine, AND it's about half the cost of most aftermarket alternatives. And then we come back to the bottom line - Toyota sells the rack for the 3rd Gen Tacoma and it doesn't fit some 3rd Gen Tacomas. They should address the problem, but they won't.

I need a place for kayaks when towing my Scamp (camper). Trying not to spend $800 on a rack...

Somewhere in this thread a member spoke about the catastrophic failure of the OEM rack hauling a kayak. There are a number of options less expensive, take a look at the Martin OR Roof Rack, $489, aluminum construction, very sturdy, similar to Prinsu, and a stand up owner that is a member here. It is very well made, and adaptable.

Just getting around to seeing this. OP you really saved me some headaches - what hogan 4 has set up is EXCATLY what I had in mind with the factory rack. Saved me $400. If you're ever in Miami - 1st beer's on me my man.

@whogan4 - Is there a way to move this Yak towers forward? I'm thinking closer to the middle of the front door, or maybe even to the first quarter of the front door. I have a Mad River Adventure 16, which looks to be significantly longer than yours (yeah - that's what she said - sorry, couldn't help the cheap joke). The bow of the boat would have to be past the A-pillar, out over the hood to avoid having 4ft of boat past the vertical bed extender. Thoughts?.

Good point about the failures. I'll check this rack out. Thank you!

Might be late to the party but does anyone know if the OEM roof rack has been updated for the 2020? I have a 2019 taco and interested in buying a OEM roof rack from a dude selling from his 2020 taco

It's a little more complicated than that. A few thousand iterations have the shark fin in a slightly different location that will foul the factory roof rack.

All factory roof racks will fit the 2019, it was the early 2020s that had the problem.

Nice "fix" Toyota... are they going to buy back the rack too? Not sure how removing the rack is considered a fix... buying an aftermarket low profile shark fin is the best practical solution for those that want to keep the factory rack...

If you don't mind losing your AM reception, there is a quick easy fix using factory replacement parts. Order 1#86760-62050/Antenna and #86077-35030/Cover from your favorite Toyota parts source (4Runner application) and install! It has the same connector but only 3 pins, not 4. The 4Runner has the AM antenna in the quarter glass, hence the smaller shark fin. All other antenna functions operate normally.TacoSFfix.jpg

Or if you are a sports fan that has to have AM radio, you can elongate the mounting hole, cut a new 1-piece inner seal from 3M double sided sheet tape that covers the entire elongated hole and mount the antenna in the new position that clears the crossbar. We took an extra precaution and filled the hole from underneath with RTV silicone just for an extra layer of weatherproofing. The outer seal is virtually for aesthetic purposes only. New position provides 1/4" clearance and did not touch with a 50lb load on the crossbar.TacoSFhole.jpgTacoSFnew.jpg
