Re-gearing a 2020 Tacoma w/Auto

    FWIW, my ‘20 automatic drives perfectly fine. I think this whole “automatic sucks” thing is a load of crap spilled mainly by purists who own the manual. People will do or say anything to justify their purchase.

    i don't know about that... i wanted an automatic and bought an automatic. don't think is sucks but it did hunt for gears and was horrible with the cruise on and damn it was weird trying to hold a steady speed. like i said before i think if it had more gear it would act a ton better

    Just picked up the truck after the install today, and have about 50 miles on it so far. I will say, its not a night and day difference in this tire size at regular cruising speeds around town, but there is a large hill going up to our house and that is where it really shines. Before, the truck used to struggle to find the right gear, and would hop between 3rd and 4th the whole way up, some times even go to 2nd. Now it holds in 4th and powers up the hill no problem. It feels like I have the stock tires back on, but handles inclines better than stock form. These are just initial impressions, more testing to come. No regrets whatsoever, and can’t wait to put it through its paces after break-in.

    Throw in into S6 and use the standard cruise, not the ACC. It will perform MUCH better.

    Whats your setup and what ratio did you go with? Any improvements in MPGs?

    Running 285/70r17 Dick Cepek trail country’s with 5.29’s. No other mod’s besides Falcon shocks.

    I’ll report back with city MPG’s tomorrow, didn’t get a chance to look at what the readout was showing. The local shop I went with recommended 5.29’s right off the bat for Tacoma AT’s, even before I mentioned a possible travel trailer purchase next year.

    Was originally disappointed with the truck when it had nearly no miles on the odo, but now my 2020 v6 sr5 shifts and runs fine. Its now as good as good as my 01 4.7 tundra driving over the same roads except way better fuel economy. I could swore toyota installed a breaking chip in the truck till it accumulated at least a 1000 miles that made the truck a pooch.

    Where I notice the power loss from the larger tires, is just getting going requires more pedal ... can you tell a huge difference there?

    For sure. The truck definitely rolls easier from a standstill, especially reversing on a slight incline. I don't have to fight it nearly as much to get moving.

    As it should. You basically re-geared to more a highway great by going with a taller tire.
