New TRD Pro tire damage

I just picked up a '20 TRD Pro last week and after only 100 miles noticed some significant tire damage that I thought may be from rubbing something. I took it into the dealer and they said nothing was wrong and maybe I was turning too aggressively. Judging by where on the tire and the type of damage that didn't seem very plausible and it was maybe done in reverse? I think I found a piece of plastic on the fender liner behind the tire that seemed to be sharp and have a piece chipped off it but I can't see how the tire would of hit there. Has anyone ever had problems like this before on a brand new TRD Pro? The damage is only on the front tires and more so on the driver side pictured.

 

I see this as a sign from the Tacoma Gods to get rid of the stock tires and get some bigger tires. All praise the Tacoma Gods!

 

Have you been off road? That looks like abrasion from being stuck and a tire spins. Plastic probably won't do that. Most likely concrete, rock, etc. I agree that it probably happened in reverse. My detective sense would say that you got stuck, put it in reverse, spun the tires, and snagged something in the hole. I could be completely wrong, but I have seen damage like that before. It happens a lot after it snows and people get stuck.

You can either deal with it or go to a Goodyear dealer and have them look at it. Goodyear will likely say it is from misuse and offer some goodwill replacement offer. Maybe 50% and you pay install costs.

 

It was driven 100% on pavement to and from work for 4 days and then to the store once on the weekend. I must be missing something because it just doesn't make sense. I'd say almost 80% of the miles driven were going to the store that one day and driving it back from the dealer as my commute is extremely short.

 

10k miles on my '20 Pro and I do not have any wear patterns close to that. Last time I've had a tire wear like that it was a wheel bearing giving out on a Chevy. But that was over the course of a few thousand miles.

 

Either your alignment is fucked or something else is.

Edit: Take it in, tell them you want an alignment because of extreme tire wear and insist it be covered by warranty. Alignment is covered for the first 12k.

 

Forgot to mention they said the alignment was fine when I took it in. The passenger side toe in was a hair off I believe he said but besides that nothing else. That's the side that has minimal damage though in comparison to the one pictured.

 

What year was the tire manufactured? It's the last 4 digits of the TIN on the tire. If they threw old tires on there it could be dry rotted. I had dry rotted tires before and they are fragile

 

Maybe bad tires? With no off-roading and given it's brand new, I tend to think something is maybe wrong with the tires.
I think the tires usually are warrantied individually by the mfg, so you may have to take it up with Goodyear. Ask dealer to document nothing is rubbing, no damage, good alignment, and mileage before you call.

 

Could be old tires on a new truck...that's one reason...date of manufacturing is coded on the side wall...google and decipher it...

 

Maybe, the truck was taken for a demo ride while still at the dealers lot, before you purchased it. You just didn't see the tire damage on delivery.

 

Any chance you missed it before you bought it?

I would rotate the tires now just to see if it really is something rubbing on the front, but honestly to do that kind of damage, you would know it. That kind of rub would have made one hell of a racket.

 

Yeah only thing I can think is hard driving on new full tread tires. That said, at least Goodyear should warranty them...the dealer really should help.

goodyear should warranty them. your dealer buys 100s of tires from them as OEM replacements they should be advocating for you here. especially if you bought the vehicle from them. talk to service manager or dealership GM.

 

So, both sides show damage just one side more. I'm tending to think like one forum member already said,its from being in FWD possibly rocky terrain, high torque, or wheels spinning. Someone took it for a joy ride "Hey, look at me i'm in a TRD Pro" how many miles on it when you got it. Go back to the dealership, take a stroll through the lot, look at some of the other TRD OR's or Pro trucks on the lot see if they have similar damage. if they do ?

 

Dealer should replace those tires. There is a split in the sidewall at 2 o'clock and it also looks like there is a small amount of cupping on the siping. No way that was done with 100 miles on pavement.

 

Maybe the dealer swapped the tires/wheels off another truck to make sale?

 

Those tires look like they have more than 100 miles on them.

 

I was thinking the same thing and the wheels have a substantial amount of dust. Not exactly what I would expect after only 100 miles.
