From what I understand, it's the 3x factor.

I saw this comment on a Seeking Alpha article, I thought it was an excellent explanation of why oil isn't going anywhere, regardless of cars:

This is exactly why I laugh at the anti-oil people.

Several years ago, we drove past a refinery in Kuwait and there was a sign out front displaying the major products made from oil. It was an eye opener, to say the least.

Most of the anti-oil arguments I see are very basic and misunderstood, Teslas are cool = less gas cars = oil is doomed.

My favorite part of the post the part about human civilization not being able to survive without oil, I couldn't agree more with that.

Have you ever seen what happens when a Tesla or similar car catches fire?

    I won't own one.

True currently, though eventually humankind will need to figure it out. While I'm no peak-oil hawk, we can't deny that the supply is finite.

Not anything I'm worried about though, I'm not gonna be around long enough to worry about it and humankind if pretty innovative and will figure out alternatives.

True and our Sun will go supernova. Neither of which I'll ever see.

When the time comes, innovation will resolve it, like it always has. My problem is when they try to force change, based on things that can't be discussed.

I have seen the commercials for XOM that shows how they're adapting and evolving. I could see them, and CVX, BP, RDS, etc. still existing in a very long time, after oil is replaced by something else. The process will take so long that those big players will have the advantage of being the ones to lead the change. It will be XOM and CVX wind and solar, or whatever, in a very long time.

Yeah oil isn't going anywhere, but it will be controlled at a price that makes it profitable and won't drive innovation away from it for a long time :) RUS/SA are smart enough, that's my thought. They'll leave prices where it's cheap enough that Ford/Kia/Etc won't make a profit from developing electrical/hybrid technologies, so they'll back burner it with the B teams. ]

Don't get me wrong, if I could get to and from work reliably on electricity I would do it. But the current options are janky cars, etc. Hybrid is a PITA because you get the IC engine to still have to deal with, the brakes need a computer to work on, etc etc. I'm still on board with a potential plug in hybrid or hell, I would even get an electric car, the chevy isn't terrible, but I won't be getting rid of the truck to do it....

I am not anti-electric engines. I have an electric lawnmower and weedeater and I love them, I want the rest of the Ego line of electric tools. I just don't think cars are anywhere near that, and while I think they will be eventually, it will be in decades not years.

I hate batteries. But, I do have a plug in snow blower I got from craigslist for like 50 bucks. Plug in isn't bad, I just don't like batteries. But, my yard is 1/3 acre so I'm just on the cusp of every option. Ride on wouldn't be unreasonable, push mower isn't unreasonable, battery isn't unreasonable with spares. Plug in would be a challenge but still within reason (but dealing with the cords is a pain. It's fine for the snow I don't do it that often, but I do my lawn 1/week for like 8 months of the year....). I have a gas push mower w/ driven wheels. I think it's a good middle ground.

Not joking, the BMW electric car has an optional range extender....it's just a diesel engine..........

I mean, when is the last time a pharmaceutical company said they had good vaccine news and got everyone excited for a day? I just need some fun headlines to read.

Imagine what will happen when someone announces a successful vaccine. It may be today, or years from now, but make sure you're invested for it!

I was thinking that, now I’m thinking of it goes another 6 months nobody will give a shit anymore. But you are probably right and there are probably enough people that will think it’s a big deal, even if it’s not

I agree with you, but the part I quoted from your post is what matters. Sentiment.
