Be glad @Oreo Cat , most of the stuff missed about deployments is unhealthy to life as a functional human being. Anyone who has been down range and dealt with actual combat type stuff (non fobbits) will only express missing things like the excitement of getting shot at and blow up. The addiction of the adrenalin on patrol or during a raid. With that comes dealing with the loss of buddies, struggling to fit in, risky behavior it try and supplement that feeling. Feeling dead inside and pretending to exist to those around you. Making plans and setting time lines as to when you’ll finally pull the trigger. Five years post retirement (20 years) and just had another major relapse a couple days ago. You can miss the sense of camaraderie, having a purpose and steady pay... but only those that have never been down range regret not going. What you’ll miss and who you’ll be after, is not what you want. At least for most people and most combat arms I’ve known.

Thanks for sharing. I’m going to send this to a VBA counselor I know. She’s been successful in getting 3 appeals won for Blue Water Navy vets, and is trying to start a homeless veteran prevention program.

Not always. When they went to area bombing in WW II the worry about collateral damage disappeared. And obviously the two A bombs didn’t consider it.

In Vietnam it wasn’t a big concern. The only reason we didn’t bomb Hanoi and Haipong were to appease the American public and to avoid additional Soviet & Chinese escalation.

Really not until the first Gulf War was much made of it. And then it was one of the mistakes that led to the second war.

War is never winnable when politicians make the rules instead of generals. Politicians only care about reelection not how many American service people die.

They're still teaching LOAC, right? Lawful and unlawful targets?

Today maybe but you said “always”. Historically that wasn’t pso. In fact it was desired as a means to undermine the populace's confidence.

If you miss it, join the reserves. As long as you have your 4 years active time, you’re considered a “non-ob” so you can drop from the reserves to the IRR at anytime, should you not like the lifestyle.

As for not deploying, that’s on you. There still are, and definitely have been, plenty of opportunities for deployments. All you have to do is volunteer for a selection/assessment. If you really wanted a deployment, you’d have done what it took to get one, so don’t be that guy who drops that line once you get out. Not being a dick, just tellin it as it is.

Take a look at all of the reserve opportunities across all of the branches and see if there are any other fields that interest you. You’ll gain more experience which will make you more competitive in the civilian market. Use your GI Bill and focus on a degree that will make you marketable. AVOID THE SCAMS! There are businesses that exist solely to take your GI bill funds and leave you with nothing more than a worthless cert or degree that you can print wallet-sized versions of on your home printer. Veterans preference can only do so much to help, especially when you have 1,000 other vets applying to the same gig on USAJobs. Take a few resume classes/workshops as well, this will help you convey your relevant skills/experience on your resume.

Last bit of advice is don’t become a Bro Vet. They are the fuckin worst. Nothing worse than a dude who was a POG or grunt without a combat deployment that slaps on some shitty tats, grows a patchy beard, pops the collar on his Hawaiian/plaid shirt, adopts a K9, and posts nothing but sheep wolf Viking ninja warrior military memes on social media. They are literally the laughing stock of the community and are only looked up to by other bro vets and JROTC kids. #Facts

Take like 2 months off to just relax and settle into a new routine. Be active in your community, engage with companies that interest you, or just take some time to travel throughout the country and take it all in. It’s normal to miss your time in service, happens to all of us. Congrats on your ETS and welcome to the outside.

Obligatory OCONUS Security Contractor Pro Tip:
Don’t do it. It’s become a cesspool for shitbag E3’s that got out and can barely tie their shoes (physically and intellectually). Unless you’re hurting financially, don’t get sucked into it.

Over in Bosnia, the Germans I worked with were VERY careful. It was the first time they'd been allowed outside of Germany since, oh, 1945, and they didn't want to fuck it up.

Good soldiers, too. Professional, competent, and eager to share their beer.

I've never known a pilot to turn down a newer aircraft, but once you clip their wings they do tend to get weepy and nostalgic about one particular airframe
