Towing in 3.5L vs 4.0L

Alright. The 04B14 tunes dropped way sooner than I was expecting. I am flashed and pretty damn happy.

If you want to borrow the Tactrix while putting up a full replacement deposit and two way shipping, gimme a ping. We can hash it out.

 

Several are rated to do so. But just because you can, doesn't mean you should. TFL demonstrated this by towing a Corvette on a flatbed with a Colorado and compared to an F150. The weight was well within both tow ratings, but the Colorado had a lot more sway.

 

Yeah, from my understanding it all has to do with gearing. The 3.5L has more HP and torque, but that's not at the wheels. It is geared toward MPG which is great for someone like me who commutes a lot, but not someone who wants to off road, lift it, put on larger tires, or tow a lot.

 

That is just the stupid 2mb file that Toyota thought was good enough for us. It is masking how good the hard parts are.

Imagine low end that is just like the high end and a couple more MPGs as a bonus.

 

Yeah but I don't know of any engine with a good low end other than maybe a diesel or EcoBoost, or something else with a turbo.

 

Just talking about ours. The sub-3,500 power band is fake news. Tuned, it is linear from bottom to top and feels like a normal V6 should. With the perf version (SFOB on the MT), it is better than it ought to be. A crap file from Toyota has caused 85% of the 3rd Gen whinging on TW.

The EB side is in the works also, but I am happy as is.

 

I like my AT so far. But then again I came from a 4 speed and I primarily commute so MPG is important to me. I have noticed the truck does not like stop and go traffic though.

 

I hear you. It is a better machine than I sometimes gets credit for.

Where I am at, the mileage is better than I expected, improving with the tune, and painless overall.

 

Definitely. I can't complain about 21 MPG where my old truck got me 17. Hoping it's as reliable as the reputation suggests, but I've only had it since April so time will tell.

 

I'm 20 since new and creeping upward.

It is. Solid build.

 

We'll see how the winter is MPG wise. To be fair, the tires are technically over inflated, but the dealership did that so I left it. I do worry about rust, but I'm hoping to get some Fluid Film on before winter.

 

35 is what I have found for both wear and handling. Too squishy at 29.

Thankfully, rust is not a thing here. So many pristine Pickups and 1st Gens that my head spins. Definitely worth protecting after seeing a few in the salt areas.

 

Yeah I think they set them at 35. They're about 36 or 37 now with the heat. Factory suggests 30.

You're lucky! Salt is like a religion where I live. The truck is 3 years old and was previously in CT so some rust has started, but nothing more than I'd expect from a 3 year old vehicle in the rust belt.

 

I was surprised after moving here. I fully expected it to be worse than PA.

 

Oddly enough the upper peninsula uses less salt than where I live and it honestly has more grip in my opinion.

that engine relys more on torque than HP
the
FAT part of the torque ban would be 25-3000rpm
not excessive rpms

dropping down 1 gear results in a mechanical advantage

I came form a 4 speed v8 auto to this 2020 sr5 v6 auto. Currently in stop and go traffic mine its fine just like i had in my 4.7 auto.....didn't like the taco at all during the first 1k miles. Seemed it got way better around 1500 miles.

 

It adapts, typically over a couple tanks of fuel. Some of it is adapting to you, and some of it is adapting to non-driver input sensors unfortunately. Sometimes that works great for some folks and not for others.

Even though I bought mine with 8mi on the odo, a big change happened after I did a reset of the learned values. After it settled in, it drove better, fixed a couple minor nuisances, and gave me another MPG to boot.
