Getting a wider and taller tire to fit?

I ordered a set of Bilstein 5100's from a local 4WD shop for my '19 TRD OR. The guy told me the added 2" lift from the shock won't allow me to go to wider tires. I had wanted to go from the stock 265/70R16 to 285/75R16. The section width is 11.22" versus 10.43" (0.8" wider). I figured with half of the width increase on the inside and half on the outside, with the added 2" lift I couid get high enough that the added 0.4" on the inside would miss what is behind the tire. The guy said too risky. I clearly don't understand the suspension geometry. I googled for Taco front suspension sketches but couldn't find anything. What do I need to do to get a wider and taller tire to fit?

 

Possibly a cab mount chop, and a good tire alignment

 

A lift (Ignoring spacer lift) won’t allow you to go any wider or any taller than what would fit with stock suspension. It’s a complete misunderstanding that many have here with Tacoma suspension.
The lift ONLY changes where the wheel rests within the exact same travel. You will have to compress the suspension more to make the wheel hit after a lift, but it WILL still hit. Most don’t use the full travel so that’s why you hear comments like “mine don’t hit after XYZ lift”.

As for what you need to do, fit the wheel, look where it’s going to hit, and trim. If you want to do it properly remove the spring and cycle the suspension finding the rub points.

4Wheelparts in Tucson. I believe they have more stores in AZ, and seem to have a few nationwide. I know they are popular with the 4 wheeling community around here. So likely a good sign.

I also got a quote for shocks and tires from a different shop (just a 1 outlet local place) and he quoted me for exactly what I asked for. Good thing I got a second opinion.

 

Chain stores have chain store liability and policies. If they say it won’t fit, it’s because it exceeds what they consider to be safe for them. Not safe for you.

 

OK. Thanks for that. Now it makes sense. And it sounds like narrower and taller won't work with the same suspension (I read somewhere that was recommended), stability aside.

Will a spacer lift allow a 1 for 1 tire size increase, i.e. 2 inch spacer allows 2 inch taller tire? At some point your going to hit the frame or the body.

 

I thought it was pretty well agreed upon that 285's will probably require some cutting?

 

Instead of listening to these guys let me chime in since I actually run 285/75/16s. I have Bilstein 5100s in the front to level the truck, so basically a 1” lift. Mine rub at full lock only when reversing. Not sure if you’ll clear them with factory wheels but I have aftermarket wheels with about 1” offset. You can do this with spacers.

 

Everything fits.

.. unless you’re a tire shop that only allows stock size tire installs.

 

CMC, CUT, TRIM, BFH, and some beers will help.

The one shop I went to didn't mention anything. 4Weelparts didn't say it would, just that it was risky. Maybe there is enough tire-to-tire and vehicle-to-vehicle variability that some get away with it and some require cutting.

 

Well, thanks for that. Since I am a newbie to 4 wheeling I figure to not dive in with both feet and start hacking the truck up. Maybe further down the road, on the next set of tires, or the next vehicle.

 

When I initially got 285/75 r16s I didn’t listen to what most have written already. I had a leveling kit and stock rims. On straight, flat ground, no rubbing. But, as soon as I turned full steering lock the tires rubbed the upper control arms, lower control arms, And the cab mount. I would also hit the front and rear inner fender wells And cab mount with mild off-road use or just backing into my garage that has an uneven entrance way.
I’ve had the cab mount chopped, aftermarket UCAs and initially had wheel spacers to clear the suspension, but have since went with after market wheels.

Listen your shop, they know/seen the pitfalls.

Unless you are willing to start cutting things and spending money, then the pocket book and sky is the limit

 

You’ve got the right idea, but that’s not how it works in the real world (depending on tire size). Tacoma first rubs the body at the cab mount, (Ignoring uca), which isn’t at full compression. So IF a specific tire on stock suspension hits the cab mount, you need to stop the suspension from getting to that cab mount rub point, so that may well be a 3” spacer lift. Also remember that not all 285/75/17 (or any other size) are the exact same size between brands or even models, that’s only a rough size. So brand X model Y tire may miss but brand X model Z tire of the exact same size may rub. It’s so specific to particular vehicles and options then when you get “close” to the limits / rub points what works for one will not work for another. Also from my perspective any tire rub at any point is not acceptable, But many find it ok. A common one is it only rubs in reverse. You know that’s going to rub like a mofo off-road under any articulation, it’s simply that the person hasn’t used full travel yet, or is fine with it rubbing.

 

Have another hobby that has gotten quite expensive (competition shooting). But from what I can tell that is a relatively inexpensive hobby compared with what I see at some of the runs and read about on the forums.

 

Mods can get expensive and addictive , especially if you start trying to wheel with people that like to hit the toughest terrain/trails. Keeping up with some of the Jones’ round here can dig you into a pretty big hole

 

It seems to me wheel spacers (or even after market wheel) can only push the tire outboard a small amount before you start hitting the fenders .....

 

Don't be afraid, just do it.
I voided my warranty with only 300 miles on the truck. CMC, small lift will get you where you can go bigger with no problems. Good luck.

 

I have 16x8 -12mm and even with the tires stuffed have not hit the outer portions of the fenders.
For the portion of the inner fender wells closest to the cab... I have some more cutting to do.
