3rd Gen HID vs LED vs Halogen H11 projector headlights

It's like the Sylvania LED's I tried, they were marketed as Fog but had the same spec as the Headlamp bulb in Europe. They still did not out do the H9 halogens, so the came out.

 

Good, should help stop some of these assholes that don’t care about blinding people.

 

They need better lawyers. FMVSS 108 is applicable to new-build vehicles only. Standards required to keep your vehicle roadworthy varies from state to state. There are also nuances with "letter of the law" and levels of enforcement in each state.

 

My question would be who is going to enforce any of this given current events. I'm not pro LED, but something did change apparently.

 

I think I'm just going to slap a couple Imalent MS18 flashlights on the front and call it a day.

Have you taken a look at the "New" 2020 Hikari TOP XHP50.2 LED? They have tried to utilize a single LED instead of 3 on the previous version. Unfortunately they have added a bulbous "dome" over the LED to help get a wider beam. This seems like it would through them much further away from the target thickness to replicate a halogen filament.

I have not tested them because the design is very poor. They have been discussed previously and are a constant source of confusion thanks to Amazon always recommending the 'newer' model, even if the newer model is the low end product when you are looking at the top of the line high performance product. The Ultras are highest level flagship model and the XHPs are the low end entry level lights. The LED emiters in the XHPs do not replicate a halogen filament in the slightest, unlike the Ultras, the focus will be poor and therefore distance performance will tank. Halogen filaments are not square. The 'domes' on the emitters are to try and bend the light to get a wider area spread and be less directional. Had it been done on something with ultra small emitters like the Ultras it could be interesting to see how it performed, but to do so on something with massively oversized emitters that do not replicate a halogen filament at all, is going to give garbage results.

 

I didn't notice that they are their low end models. Don't worry, I'm staying with my GE +130.

 

Got my Tungsram 130+ H11’s in a few days ago as backups for my GE’s. Pretty much same packaging as the GEs except these were made in Budapest Hungary.

 

The GEs were made in Hungary too. Nothing changed other than the labeling, Tungsram always made the bulbs, they were just labeled as GE.

 

Yeah I knew Tungsram made them from a previous post you made, I don’t have the packaging from my GE set so I’ll take your word this time that they were made in Hungary, though I’m pretty sure my OEM stock H9’s that came on my truck are OSRAM and not Philips

 

I just got my H11 130+ as well, curious to see how they shine tonight. So the stock hi beams are H9 and we use philips there?

 

Correct, stock high beam is Philips H9.

 

You know, so many of us have fogs, seems like maybe there might be interest in a unified harness. One power lead, one ground, 10 or 8 gauge with pre crimped leads, a combo fuse block and relay case which mounts to a factory spot, h9 compatible connectors for lows and fogs, a few zip ties and one page install sheet. Premium relays which could be easily replaced. I’m guessing nobody makes such a thing yet.

 

I'm not sure what you're asking for, or why it'd be needed. The OE wiring on my truck is plenty adequate. Why whould you want to fix what ain't broken?

 

I just verified that my H9 high beams are indeed Philips, 65W, it was my original H11 low beam OEMs that were Osram. As previously mentioned, Now running GE Megalight Ultra 130+ in my low beams, , 3rd gen headlight design 2016-2019 is generally quite poor performing as demonstrated in IIHS testing, so the GE 130+ helped a lot for the low beams.

I don't think the wiring is optimum, looking at the wiring to the fog lights and to the headlights, looks like pretty small gauge wires, hard to tell with the insulation but appear to be around 18 AWG. I'm not going to change it though.

 

Don't have a 3rd Gen to comment, but I upgraded the ones on my 2nd Gen to 12AWG. Beefy. But I am also running higher power headlights. I don't think it would be worth it on 3rd Gen, but Rallylights does sell an H11 harness that I had them put together for fogs long ago before there were good LED options, it would be a bit long for headlights. Diode Dynamics LED fogs are the recommended way to go for fogs, they use less power than stock and LEDs are not affected by small amounts of voltage drop the same way that halogens are.

A few had those made for 2nd Gen by Rallylights in the 2nd Gen headlight thread. H11 fog and H4 headlights in a single harness. Wasn't really any cost savings though, and it makes it less modular so once you go to LED fogs it isn't needed, but also cannot be removed since it is a part of the headlight harness. Headlight Services builds far nicer harness than Rallylights, but they primarily just do H4.
