What batteries do you recommend? i’ve use optima in the past and am considering going that route again. any others you’d recommend over optima and why. thanks

Most batteries are manufactured by one of 3 different mfg groups...I dont think brand is as important as it once was. I think pricepoint within a category is though.

You'll get as many answers as there are batteries. Personally, I like Optima.

Without a doubt. Optima is not what it once was.

Are you installing a dual battery kit? Is the kit designed to work with a certain brand of batteries?

The best battery I ever had was a SEARS diehard Platinum AGM. lasted over 6 years in my Jeep Liberty CRD. the diesels like mine came with an Optima red top from the factory. my red top died weeks after I bought the vehicle so it was just over 3 years old. Optima is made by Jonson controls, since they moved production to mexico I been hearing quality and product longevity was lower. Sadly Sears is a sinking ship after over a century in business so I would not buy them any more. Look at Odyssey who made them for Sears or the north star and x2 mentioned above.

Odyssey supposed to be the top brand. Life expectancy 12 years.
I myself use Optima but ever since the move south to Mexico...so did the quality!

I got 11 years out of my last Odyssey, it was nice to install it and never had to mess with it again as it was totally corrosion free. I still use the battery in my garage for bench testing things as it still holds a charge.

I used to use Interstate exclusively but about ten years ago I had a run (probably four in two years) of bad batteries from them so I stopped using them.

I'm a big fan of Odyssey batteries! I just removed one from one of my motorcycles which had been in continuous use for the past 12 years! My air-cooled VW uses one because where I have it mounted (above and in front of the engine) the battery is nearly impossible to access without removing the engine. Lots of off-roading, heat, water, dirt, sitting for weeks or months at a time; all the things batteries hate and it never gives me any problems.

I would recommend Odyssey for a dual-battery set-up. It'll be pricey but they really do seem to have a superior product. They really seem to have figured-out how to do AGM's.

To be fair I also use an Optima Blue Top in my Travel Trailer and an Optima Yellow Top in my other VW. The Blue Top is five years old but still seems to be working fine (although it's in an RV). The Yellow Top is the only battery which would fit in the location where it needs to be in that car so that's why it got a Yellow Top. I've also had good luck with regular wet cell auto parts store batteries in my vehicles which don't go off-road.

Johnson Controls makes most of the batteries now so WARRANTY should be the concern in my opinion. When your battery shits the bed in 19 months, it's going to be really hard to get your money back from "Sammie" on www.tacomaworld.com. I've used Autozone batteries for decades and never had a problem when it went bad.

AGMs are indeed the best batteries, however the Taco charging system will not fully charge an AGM.

So a lithium battery would be the “best” battery but also the most expensive. I just did a Lithium battery in my 911 for....hold on, $1100! I’m sure the Porsche Tax had something to do with it but you should expect a big jump in cost with this type of battery.

As I said everyone has opinions. So far I haven't been disappointed in Optima. YMMV.

The real problem with optima, was when they announced the closing of the Colorado shop, which was Union, the quality went to hell quickly. Then after the move, the Mexico plant had a steep learning curve. I warrantied many red tops over 5-6 years. I think they have worked it out now. Personally, the only thing a Optima offers is mounting it upsidedown, and you can put a 1000 amp charge on it and it won't blow....and that's about it.
DISCLAIMER; DO NOT PUT A 1000 AMP CHARGE ON A RED TOP. IT WILL MELT. (80 would be interesting and 60 will make it smoke). LMAO
