Advice on quote from car audio shop

Does this sound reasonable compared to what others have paid at a professional car audio shop? I don’t expect it to be cheap, especially from a professional shop. Just want to make sure that it’s not unreasonable bc I really have no idea. He is saying they’re going to build custom PVC housing or something like that in the doors. The speakers are actually a total of $40 less than Crutchfield. That being said, it does seem like a lot to me. I’m going to install the amp and sub myself. I kind of want to have this part done right so I don’t have a bunch of rattle in the doors and it will take Most of the installation off my plate.

Why do you say that? Not much more than I would’ve charged at BestBuy, and a bit cheaper than most of the local shops in my areas would charge (and I’m in Alabama where everything is cheap)

 

It seems right. Canadian source is about the same. Labour, or Labor, is a bitch, that's why I ended up doing as much of the work myself. I did my own sound deadening, and rear speaker install, saved many $$.

 

Thanks for the responses. Yeah, at first reaction I said wow that’s a lot of money to install this speakers and an amp, the fact is that peoples time is expensive. To take apart The interior of the truck and install this is time consuming. Going to tell them to move forward with it. Also nice that it’s going to be done prior to pick up of the vehicle because they do all the tint work for the dealership.

You can do the door speakers yourself. They are incredibly easy and if you take your time and follow instructional videos you won’t have rattles. It’s a couple screws and some clips. Toyota couldn’t have made this easier. As far as amp install those numbers look in line with some of the quotes I’ve gotten in the past.

Installing the door speakers is way easier than installing an amp. If you buy them from Crutchfield they will come with wire harness adapters and speaker mounts free. What you need to prevent rattling is sound deadening mats, which I don’t see listed in your quote, but it is easy to install yourself if you want to add it.

 

If you go to through the shop route, that does seem fairly reasonable. There’s not a ton of wiggle room on the product, as for labor, $90 seems reasonable. Really the only place you might be able to save retail pricing on is your speaker adapters. You don’t need custom ones for the doors, but they might need plates for the tweets. I’d guess it might be a $50 savings vs their quote.

If you feel comfortable tackling the amp, 4 on the doors are super easy.

 

I think it’s a pretty fair quote on the labor side, not sure how the parts price out vs sourcing them yourselves but it also looks reasonable. Hell their labor rate is 2/3 to half of what most shops in my town charge.

For me, I’d rather do the work myself vs spending $550 for someone else to do it, especially if you’re already planning on doing the sub and mono amp yourself and if your want to eventually line the doors for a quieter truck.

Estimate is fair, but speakers are so easy that even a novice with a screwdriver can do all four on a Saturday morning. The key amp really isnt super difficult either. But if you prefer not to mess with it, those labor charges are fair. If I were you, Id also add the Subaru tweeters.

 

Yeah I Kinda just don’t want to mess with it. Got some other things going on. The components kicker 6x9s will substitute for the Subaru tweeters I believe.

 

Just be aware if you use a "professional shop," you should expect that your wires will be cut and spliced into the radio. Don't be completely surprised if you eventually have a short or a parasitic electrical drain that will be a pain to track down...

If you buy a radio from Crutchfield, you'll get a harness that you splice the radio into, that will plug into the factory wiring. Every future radio upgrade will be starting with the full factory wiring harness. If you decide to sell your truck, you can pull your new stereo out and install the original head unit.

Or you can just have a shop chop your wiring harness...lol

 

Some people's time is worth more than thier money, but why dont you want to install it all yourself?

If you're gonna do the amp and sub, might as well do the rest of it on your own. Save some money. Theres so many how it's between TW and YouTube.
