Progress continues on the makeover/paint job. Today, was getting the bed ready to come off. Had to disconnect and remove my second battery and inverter, then pull all of the wiring that I had coming up into the bed, which seems like a lot, with lights inside topper, brake light, high mounted backup light, and light bar on my rack. Then I pulled out the bed liner. It hasn't been out in roughly 15 years. I was anxious to see how well the bed had faired under it. I had painted a coating of wheel bearing grease on all of the surfaces of the bed. I am pleased to say that there was virtually no rust under the liner, just a little bit along one of the seams, and I think that migrated up from underneath rather than from top down. Last thing was pulling the bed bolts. I put off the two rear ones, as they are hard to reach, rather starting with the other four. Even though those bolts had only been in place for about three years since my frame replacement, they were absolute bears to get out, every one had rust on the portion that extended through the welded nut. At that point, I thought I would never get those remaining two out, since less leverage, etc. But to my surprise, the tech had, per my instructions, put a liberal coating of anti-seize on those two, and they came out quite easily. I had instructed him to use it on every bolt in the reassembly, but for some reason those four bed bolts were missed. (My guess is that he had someone helping, and he did the rears, they the others.) Anyway, the bed is ready to be lifted off, and I will be giving everything a good cleaning and painting while it is off. Again, here is my plug for always reassembling with anti-seize!! It pays huge dividends.

Looks like you're missing the drain plugs in the bed. Let me know if you need the part number. I just ordered a pair.

Today I refinished the screws and bolts in the cab. Took them all out, put them through my ultrasonic cleaner to eliminate the rust (I have one on hand for reloading ammo), used a wire brush attachment on my drill to brush the heads, then put them all through a cold blueing agent to turn them black/dark. Then a quick wipe of a gun oil/solvent for protection and put them back in. Gooder than new! Also took a toothbrush with the same gun oil/solvent to the seat mounts to clean them up some.

Good eye, but that bed is the one I am striping and will be replacing, so everything is off of it now, right down to the rope hooks and plastic pieces for the tail lights. Still a good solid bed, with the exception of the outer panels. One was damaged and repaired, with a lot of putty, and the other side is just starting to get a bit of rust on the wheel well. New one is from a central Florida truck. No rust!!!!

Load that shit up and head on up. Swapping the trans is no issue for me. No clue what goes in to the rest of that swap and how long it would take.

I might need to rescind my previous comment.

Tomorrow, I’ll get my trans and tcase breathers ran up to the firewall, my rear drive shaft in and probably get my interior put back together before I throw the wheels on and pull her out of the garage for the month and drive the 3.5 hours to Boise to catch my flight. I’m really excited to pull it out of the garage with the 5.29 in the rear end, especially with my 32.75” tires! It’s probably going to leave me longing for a twin case though, if I had to guess.

    That pilot needs full penetration.

What are we trying to figure out? If OEM only had a sticker? I've gotten CVs from CVJ that were not OEM Tacoma.
