The lighting harness is only where you install the switch and takes about 1min to access the center area. The glove box area is more work to access for the main install.

    Just sayin'.

    Yep, this.

Pop off the radio bezel, pop off the HVAC panel, and the switch is easily accessible.

    Sweet ones.
Does anyone want to buy my large ch4x4 2lo switch? I didn’t realize the switches in the center stack were the “small” button version. If you’re installing to the left of the wheel it’ll work great. $10 shipped only took it out of the package to realize it was too big.

Mine arrived last week... was in transit almost 2 weeks to make it to Ontario. I just haven't had time to install it yet.

I have the CH4x4 switch. Do I need another harness if I want the backlights on the switch to work? What happens if I just plug 2lo mod harness to the switch?
I can hack something together if I know which wires need to go where.

I installed my 2WD 4LO and it is amazing! One of the best modifications you can do (especially if you have a manual).20200601_195646.jpg 20200601_195712.jpg 20200613_143517.jpg

Awesome! Glad you like it. It is definitely one of my favorite mods and I use it all the time even when I am not towing anything. It will definitely prolong the life of your clutch.

Also, sorry I never replied. As you probably found out, one of the lights will always be on, and the other will come on with the switch. I'm still working on getting the PnP harnesses to tie into the stock illumination circuit. The link to that thread is in the top of the this thread. If you are interested keep an eye on that one. It will be fairly easy to install after the fact. You just pop off the radio trim, then the HVAC controls. You have easy access to the switches below.

I’m hoping to get mine installed this weekend now that I have my switch.

One thought I had since I don’t have much of any immediate plans to tow. Has anyone used this to deal with heavy traffic? I was thinking it might be nice for the 1-2 mph rush hour crawl. Just not sure how quick it is to switch back to 2 high when traffic starts to flow.

I don't see why you couldn't do that. It does take a couple seconds to switch back to 2hi, so you may end up getting honked at by impatient drivers.

I have used it a couple times on long, controlled on ramps. Heading uphill, it saved a ton of pedal work and slipping. Serious non-mall crawlin' right there!

I have also used it in a blocking collision backup.

General traffic is tough because you never really know when it is going to break up. After the motor really breaks in, 1st gear in 2Hi crawls pretty nicely though.

That said, we can run up to the limiter in 6th, which is almost 60mph. I would not do that for more than a moment, but I have ran in 6th at 35. That was fast enough.

Got my mod put in today. Super easy install and works great! @lapoltba thanks for putting this together. I'll be watching for the illumination harness......

    So. Many. Stickers.
Got mine installed this past week. I've already used it three or four times. Including taking a sharp turn and being surprised by very high water. Having that for backing up was a lifesaver.

also, do you really have to remove all the center console stuff to get the center dash controls out? My switch is currently over on the left side of my steering wheel (replaces my auto high beams, a useless feature) but I'd rather have it under the HVAC controls next to the four-wheel drive selector.

I was on a bit of a time crunch when I installed it, I didn't want to end up taking two or three hours to get all of the center console stuff out just to get under those controls.

You only need to pop off the head unit bezel and pull out the HVAC panel. From there you can easily finger the back side of the switches.

Well, unless you are @Shellshock . He can get his long ones down there without pulling the HVAC panel. :D

all I did was pull out the head unit and reach behind the HVAC to pop it out :notsure:

I’ve don’t think I’ve ever removed the HVAC panel in my Tacoma

Am I the only one mounting the switch overhead?

No. I’m just waiting for the daisy chain power mod and I’ll move mine up there.

I figure I’d have all my traction And drive stuff in the same place. (Other than 4x4)

Fair warning on this one... I have a sample of the overhead harness coming, but I have no idea if it will actually fit in the overhead console. It's a pretty chunky plug up there. You may need to use one of the other two locations and run longer wires up there. I will see how it fits on my truck and post in the other thread.

I’m game either way.... I have plenty of wire, pliers, heat shrink, and solder.
