Wow! 2.5 block and nothing? makes you wonder if it’s transferring through the leaf springs like they think .

on one of my visits Toyota told me my Tonnele cover was the cause of the whine. mid ride along I took it off to prove to him that was not the cause which then he said my tires were causing it! I think he was going to blame my seat covers next. They know something is wrong or the TSB would have never come out.

Diffs are from a third world country Thailand, cheap mfg, poor product due to cost cutting materials.

What material are your blocks made of? I know aluminium is a superior conductor of sound.

Not sure, don’t even know the brand. It was supposed to be a spring lift but the shop hosed me

Seems like most blocks are billet aluminum but who knows. If i spend the money to do a lift and it still howled I might drive off a cliff. I like the truck as is, but getting desperate.

My truck as the howling noise (like a kazoo) when feathering the throttle. Happens to me (so far) between 35 and 60mph. I saw one person's post about the noisy fuel pump, and that sound similar to my noise. However, my noise is only there under a very light throttle. I hear it even louder when the rear window is open. Does any have the TSB number(s) that they could provide me. I have an appointment with the dealer this Monday. Any suggested information I can provide them my help. Thanks in advance.

Just spoke with another 2019 trd owner here today for awhile thats really pissed about a few things on his v6 auto dd cab taco namely the lack of low end, and howling. Couldn't believe me when i told him my 2020 had none of that. He even followed me back 25 miles to town on some hilly roads trying to match the same speed on my truck. On one steep grade i could see his truck losing steam falling back. I had no issues climbing right up at 60 mph while taching around 2200 rpm in the regular drive mode. When we reached a flat stretch over a mile he gained steam like grant took richmond coming up right on my rear bumper. Imo, i'm thinking his transmission must be stuck in 5th gear on those hills not downshifting. I felt my truck downshift to 4th as soon as the grade got a bit steeper staying in the meat of the power band. Still don't know what this howling is on some trucks.

I had two friends in my backseat last weekend on the way to the ranch. It was F****ng embarrassing.
I had no words. I did my best to stay away from the speed range that produces the most "whining" volume.
Still, it was unavoidable in areas. What crap!......

I am a long time Tacoma driver/owner, but with this annoying diff problem, I am giving a long hard look at the new 2021 Nissan Frontier when it arrives, with the new 3.8L V6 310 hp and new 9 spd auto. Should be out at the end of 2020. Can't be any worse than this?

I like the Frontiers a lot, the current ones anyway. I don't know that I would be looking at a first model year 2021 though... especially with a 9 speed auto. Those things are reliability nightmares for a lot of manufacturers.

Never know anytime you get into those type transmissions it can become a can of worms. I've got friend with 8 speeds, ask them how they like their transmissions...one guys colorado 8 speed is currently filed under the lemon law. Best to hope nissan got it right the first time.

Everyone I know with a Nissan has had major electric and drivetrain issues. One friend of mine just got a brand new Nissan titan lemon law because of transmission issues it just wouldn’t stop.

There’s a nice 2016 Chevy Silverado for sale in my area.... I keep trying to remind myself of all the horrible problems I had with my 2005 Silverado, but this whine gives me crazy thoughts.

I have a 05 Chevy that really hasn’t given me much trouble, even approaching 200k. I give it more leeway than the brand new tacoma of course

My neighbor has an 05 2500 chevy 4wd. It has had its issues with the 4wd actuator. Apparently he had to change out the transfer case recently hoping it stays fixed.

    Thank you to the gu
UPDATE: (Keep in mind, I only got 540 miles on my truck) I dropped my vehicle off this morning at 10am. The service manager rode with me and verified the noise. He said he has not heard this kind of noise from a Tacoma in a long time. I just got a call from them at 1:30pm, and they said that my ring and pinion are out of specifications. They don't want to take any chances. They are going to put a new rear end in it. The part is due here tomorrow, and they should be done with my vehicle by the end of day tomorrow. Hopefully,

If you read the thread you'll see the next diff is probably going to whine as well and a whine isn't indicative of anything "out of spec". Though it is cute they decided to go that route.

When I dropped it off and after the service manager verified my noise, he said they would compare it to a new truck (even though mine is pretty new, I haven't made my first payment yet). He said since I have my full warranty still ahead of me, I could just take the truck back and see if it gets any worse then bring it up at the first service (5K or 6 months). I decided to let the take a look at it. I was fully expecting them to tell me it was a normal noise. However, they said they want to replace the rear diff. Let's hope they do it right and that the noise is at least 50% more quiet. I will let you all know.

Don't be surprised if you dont notice any sound reduction after the diff change.
