i had a cook that outranked me assigned to my support element. I was an E6, he was an E7.

that motherfucker was awesome. Cooked up a storm, and did everything he could to support us.

If we were doing defense drills, he climbed into his kit like the rest of us. then did everything he could to learn the guns, fire control measures, radio work, vehicle refit SOP, range procedures, inbound aircraft SOP, inbound vehicle SOP. he was an animal.
had a brand-new PFC that was his assistant, and that kid was just as eager to do his part

the PFC did what he could to keep up, but he was still new, first deployment

the SFC was shot out from under us while performing as an AG for a 240 in a guard tower during a dedicated attack on our compound.
he went to Landstuhl, then he went to BAMC, then he went in the ground.
divorced, no kids. that's all i ever learned of the man

the PFC did everything he could to keep up with what his leader did for us.
we had to sit down with him and explain that he's just one guy and that he needs to sleep sometime
his respectful response "i can sleep when i get home"

the kid refueled trucks, slung cargo, checked log deliveries for explosives, burned trash, and would still get up in the middle of the night to make coffee for primary security and the radio shack. and cook.

he went home with an ARCOM V for his role in the base defense that killed his leader.

we later invited him and his wife to a dining-out. we brought a case of scotch to that kid's table and told his wife how lucky she was to have a man like him. a proud moment to be sure.

i found out later he went to SFAS and tried out for a team. i hope he made it, he had no quit in him

    my point:
the most difficult thing to teach a person is how to give a fuck
some won't ever get there. but with a good example and some prompting, a person will eventually grow away from apathy

please speak gently of support personnel, they're not all the same person

Happens all the time in the civilian world. All the tech going in to the planes these days is taking the pilot out of the cockpit. I literally take off, autopilot on at 400’, let the plane fly and disconnect autopilot at usually 1000’ on final in VMC or at minimums (200’ AGL) in IMC if I have the runway in sight. Gets awful boring just pushing buttons and talking on the radio (don’t really even do much of that anymore either due to CPDLC)

Fo shizzle. I've known F-4 pilots that would NOT shut up about it.

We're like, "dude, that thing tried to KILL YOU ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS!!!"

They'd simply sigh and go "you just don't understand her." We understood. She was a fickle bitch. Every time we'd try to point this out, we'd hear about how the Phantom had a "spirit" that the F-16 didn't.

Pretty sure those were fucking ghosts, man. Your airframe was haunted.

    ^^^^

My dad was a pilot since the 60's, started in the Navy, retired from TWA as a 747 capt/instructor, then flew for 16 more years for Citation. Try watching Tora, Tora, Tora with him. "Ohhhhh, I remember flying that, yup, flew that, ahhhhh those catalinas were tricky......" through the whole mother fucking movie!!!!!

Finally, the zero comes on....."let me guess dad, you were a kamikazi too?"
    "Fuck you Robert"

This one tired to kill me and I was on the ground. Hot brakes, tire blew and went through the windshield of the P-2 I was crew chief on. Sadly it became a plane on a stick in front of the HG when the 16's came along. Later they closed the base and some idiot drug down to the end of the flight line and into the dirt. Haven't been back to the base in years. I hope someone rescued it.

And during it's time it was the fighter all others, regardless of nationality or service were judged by. From bomb truck to supersonic interceptor it did it all.

The barter system is very much alive and functional within the ranks of the United States armed forces.

And sometimes we do and choose to ignore it for our sanity. Several times I saw too many toes while walking through my 10 bed hooch while deployed but I knew they belonged to people I didn’t care to see naked so eyes forward, keep on walking
