ok.. need to figure out tweeter wiring WTF?

Well I am upgrading just the tweeters with

$63 polk db1001 1" silk/polymer composite dome tweeters (pair, black)

polk db1001 1" tweeters in my 06 DC. I have the mounts but what I am unsure about is the wiring. On the L/F door (where I started) the tweeter plug on the door skin has 2 pink wires the + and two purple wires the -. Then from the plug up to the tweeter its self is 2 red and 2 black wires. I peeled back the black wiring cover over the tweeter wires and found that the 2 red and 2 black wires turn into a single red and black wire to the tweeter. So where should I splice my new + and - tweeter wires to the factory wiring?

 

The factory tweeters have two wires connected. One is red and the other is black. The red is positive and the black is negative. Don't get confused by the wiring harness, I know there are 4 wires connected at the harness connector, but the two you need are connected directly to the factory tweeter. I can only assume the extra wiring at the harness connector is necessary for some upgraded Toyota sound system that you do not have, maybe the JBL system.

 

Not all tweeters can be wired in like the stock ones are. Some have to be hooked up to your woofer through a ________(forgot the name of this part but it looks like a black tube).

 

I looked up the tweeters he mentioned in his post. They have an inline passive crossover so he will be fine. My only concern is the crossover point is different than his factory ones. I looked at my old ones and that thing is more like a 2" midrange speaker than a tweeter.

 

something does not add up to me what I saw was 2 pink and 2 purple wires from the wiring harness in the door going into 2 black and 2 red wires going to the tweeter on the left front door. Now if you take a look at a speaker wiring diagram the pink color wire indicates the "+" and the purple color "-". So what I did was match the 2 pins in the conector that were pink (+) to the black wires and matched the other 2 purple (-) wires to the red on the other side of the connector. However when you look at the factory tweeter its self the mark on the tweeter next to the red wire sodder connection indicates + and the black -. I thought that the mating pins on the connector (pink+ & purple-) would determine what it would match on the other side. It almost seems like it switches positive and negative from the harness to the tweeter some place. Should I hook up the after market tweeter positive to the red wire and negative to the black wire????? odd that pink wire = black wire and purple wire = red wire ????? tell me what I am doing wrong?

I gave you an answer a few posts ago. Leave the harness and factory connector, disconnect the two wires going to the factory tweeter and use them.

The part n315on described is a capacitor.

 

so use the red wire and connect it to the + connection on the new tweeter and the black wire to the - connection.... right? just wanted to check. sorry for being a pain just got all ass backwards about matching up the different wire colors.

 

No the part he is talking about the a Crossover. A capacitor goes between the batter and the amp. you dont hook up tweeters to a capacitor. a capacitor is pretty much a small battery to get rid of dimming headlights every time the sub hits.

 

You are mistaken. I was not talking about that application for a capacitor. I am talking about the one that is commonly wired in line with a speaker that acts as a HP filter. A crossover commonly uses capacitors and resistors in a circuit that the speakers are wired to externally. I've never seen one that looks like a small black tube like he was describing, but I have often seen a capacitor wired to a speaker acting as a HP filter.

Dude, it makes absolutely NO difference which way you wire the speakers. Just make sure that you wire the one in the passenger door exactly the same way, otherwise they'll seem extremely quiet (phase cancelation), other than that it doesn't matter, they'll work both ways.

 

Actually I was talking about a crossover. Maybe I didn't do the best description of it, my bad.

 

06TXED, how did you end up doing this? Did you go red wire to positive, or red to negative on the tweeter? I never saw a definite answer on here and now I’m in the same boat as you.

 

From what I understand, the connection to the tweeter is the junction for the other speaker. You want to splice each pair together to get the bottom speaker working.

Now take a non polarized electrolytic capacitor and connect one end to the positive wire. The other end goes to the NEGATIVE terminal on the tweeter. The capacitor by it's nature inverts the signal + in - out. Connecting the tweeter backwards keeps in in phase with the other speaker. Meaning they both move in the same direction.
