Ok I'm new here and just not wanting too get ripped on but here it goes. I couldn't find the information or thread i was looking for, so.. i just picked up a 2004 4runner for the drive train, 200,000 body all bashed up, couldn't pass it up for 700, made a 2 1/2 run home, so not too bad, I was checking it over when i realized it has a transmission dipstick, has anyone converted there Tacomas to this? (Mines a 2007) On first inspection looks like a pan swap? I'm a bit old school, i like to check out my fluids before I run 4+ hrs, its always pissed me off, that i can't check transmission fluid easily,

sounds like you might have picked up the weird combo of back in the day of the 1gr mated to the FOUR (4) speed auto trans. Completely different trans. for a few years they mated the same trans as the 2nd gen taco i4 auto / 1st gen taco auto / 3rd gen 4 runner auto to the 1gr.

If it says the same trans number in the door sticker it should be good. My 2014 regular cab 2wd has the same pan as a 1985 model. A340e was made just a tad too long I think.
A340e auto and a340f if I'm not mistaken is simply a different bell housing. I believe that is just 4wd and 2wd differences.

Awesome thanks never thought to check wwikipedia for toyota transmission info. Got to do a drain and fill on it this summer, so i figured if the pan is the same, I'll measure what I take out, switch pans if possible, then put that much back in, and see if it is correct on the dipstick, i was hoping someone on here may have already tried it

Yeah, Wikipedia is pretty useless most of the time. But article is strangely in depth. Kinda strange, but valuable.

correct. thats the 4 speed auto.

If op has a 5 speed auto its a completely different trans and a "dip stick" can not be retrofitted at all.

Honestly, a conversion kit would probably be easiest if you hav some know-how, if the one from the old truck doesn't work.

I thought only v8 4runners had dip sticks.

The older A750 (used Type T-IV ATF)in the v8 4runners had a dipstick until they went to the sealed variant of the same a750 in 04 I think. The 03-04 4runners used the a340 trans with the 4.0 v6. Then in 05, when the 2nd gen Tacoma got the “sealed” a750 trans, so did the 4.0 in the 4Runner.

I've never heard of anyone offering a conversion kit, or even of anyone talking about one. Every dipstick tube that I've seen goes through the engine block then down into the transmission pan.

On my a340e it goes directly to the pan. Remember that it's a really old tech and not surprising you haven't seen them very often.

You mean goes through the transmission, transmission dipsticks don't go through engine blocks.

While I wouldn’t trust a dipstick conversion To give me an accurate level reading it sure would make the fluid changes a bit easier plus you can monitor your fluid color.

Once you learn how to do a pan drain correctly you will realize you don’t need a dip stick.
