Learn From My Mistake - Replace Plastic Oil Filter Housing With Metal

Why when I check every site the number

15620-31060 ( number recommended ) reflects does not fit 2019 Tacoma.

Is it that Toyota does not make an aluminum oil filter cartridge for the Tacoma yet it’s the same fit x-referenced to other Toyota vehicle.

Just asking.

 

Yeahhhh just snapped the plastic tabs off my filter housing using a breaker bar cause it was put on way too fckn tight by the dealership...

 

Would think they’d know by know anything to do with oil filter needs to be loosely hand tightened that’s why my truck has 20k and hasn’t seen a dealer and never will. Wouldn’t want to put her threw that nightmare again. I only trust myself with my truck and my very close friend who isn’t a mechanic but has fixed everything more convienently and faster then any mechanic I’ve been to. And no I don’t bring it to him to change my oil I watched a YouTube video!

 

Tried a bunch of different ways to break it free. Tapped the filter housing with a large punch (not too hard), penetrating oil (didn’t want to but I was desperate), 2 different oil filter adapters, and paper for added friction which actually helped a lot. Tried a breaker bar but that’s what broke the plastic clips on the side.

Ended up using a torque wrench. Mostly for leverage but not as flexible as a breaker bar and also to see how over torqued it was....

The torque wrench maxed out at 80 ft lbs... and I still had to wrench harder before it broke free.


It doesn’t seem that the filter housing cracked, just the tabs broke. So I’ll hopefully get by with it until the metal one linked in this thread arrives.

Yep my 1997 never went to a dealer in the twenty years I owned. 330K on the odometer and solely changed the oil via mityvac oil extractor. Changed out three starters, two radiators, six brake changes, and sealed valve cover gaskets with FIPG. My 2016 in 47K has entune 'compatibility' issues and need to take to the dealer to reflash the transmission tuning according to latest TSB - not happy with this Taco.

 

So you didn't have a problem with your transmission until you read it had a problem

Because I'm not mentally retarded and defeated by a piece of fiber reinforced plastic with threads on it. Lefty loosey works the same on the Tacoma filter housing as it does on a spin-on filter. It's as easy or difficult as the last idiot to screw on the filter (or housing) determines. Mine sucked once, the factory fill. Since then it's been a breeze, but then I understand complex physics principles like oil will drain out if you remove the plug and don't turn a filter housing full of oil upside down if you don't want the oil to pour out on the floor.

 

Been there, did that...feel your pain, the aluminum housing hasn't failed yet...49K on my '17

 

thank you for posting this info. My housing is gorilla tight on there , all tabs sheered off upon attempting to remove. Ordered metal housing OP suggested on Amazon . God bless bezos
My hopes: I can remove busted shit plastic housing with out losing all my precious new oil. Then replace with baller metal upgrade housing and new filter.

 

The dealer put the filter housing on so tight on my wife's 2017 4Runner, the OEM filter wrench I bought at Toyota just kept slipping off (and it even has the cut-outs to prevent slipping off). The only way I could get the housing loose was to put a floor jack under the breaker bar (sandwiching it between the housing and the jack), and lift the front end up until enough weight was resting on it to keep it from slipping, and I finally got it loose. Fuckin neanderthals.

 

That is exactly correct.
This Toyota Part is, technically, for other Toyota Vehicles with the same 3.5L V6 motor, but it fits on our trucks just fine. Why Toyota decided to use a plastic filter housing on these trucks is beyond me.
I put one of these on my new truck at the first oil change, a year ago, and no problems.

 

Just ordered the metal housing from the Amazon link. Got the fumoto drain valve as well, can't wait to do my first oil change.

 

Did my first change yesterday and the filter cap moved a bit when I started to remove the plug. So absolutely no issues removing the housing and I'm the first one touching it. I doubt the factory set it at 18 lb-ft since the plug goes on at 10. I should go torque it more so that I can have your all experience next go round; sounds like I got lucky.

We'll see if it's a piss pot next time I have to remove it since I'm the one who set it to "factory spec".

 

If i had a nickle every time i looked something up for my truck and found a good solution/tool, then see it was you who posted.... I'd be able to get a sixer of coors light by now. Thanks buddy.

Nah. Factory torque needed my longer half inch drive ratchet and a decent yank to loosen. I think I used the same or my torque wrench to loosen it after the ToyotaCare services were done. Nothing extreme though. I did my 50k a month ago or so. My standard 3/8in drive and appropriate pressure backed it right off. I should have taken a video.

 

I did my first oil change at 5,000 miles and mine was not on too tight at all. I did have the metal cartridge ready to go but didn't use it yet.
I bought the motiveX cap wrench from Amazon for around $25. I used a 27mm socket on a half inch ratchet to turn it not the 3/8 square drive.
I could have and should have used my new torque wrench to put it on but I just turned it on hand tight and give it a little nudge with the cap wrench and rachet, like 1/8 turn or Less . So far no leak and Im almost to my first Toyota Care oil change so we will see how tight they make it when I do the oil at 15,000.
I believe I will use the plastic one as long as I can.

 

I did my own oil change about a year ago at 5k torqueing my new aluminum housing and plug to the 10 and 18 as called for. I just did the oil change at 10k and the aluminum housing and its plug loosened right up like I thought it should have. No issues when you do it yourself. Housing and plug did not seem too tight or too loose when loosening. Screw the dealership.

 

I'm the only one who has changed the oil on my '18. Never had a problem with the plastic oil housing, or the drip screw either.
