Let's See Some Softoppers

My last two truck I had hard caps. Here is my first soft topper. I was impressed with the fit and finish.

 

I'm about to pull the trigger on a softopper but can't decide between the bestop supertop 2 and softopper. I don't like the velcro on the softopper and I dont want to drill into the bed, that's making me lean toward the bestop. Anybody running the softopper without velcro? Also, if anyone has any experience with the tent bed add on from softopper let me know if it's worth the money. Thanks in advance

 

Velcro at the front of the bed to keep the cab/bed flap down? The screw in snaps are self tapping I put just 2 in on the front end of my bed to hold the between the cab/bed part down during cross winds. Havent looked back and literally never notice them in the bed when I have the softopper off.

 

I was more worried about the flapping on the tailgate. I understand that there's velcro used to keep it from flapping there, too.

 

Ahh gotcha, I know a lot of people if they do use it stick a strip magnet to the backside of the velcro strap so it magnets to the tailgate. I dont use anything and just let it flap in the wind. It has never flapped hard enough to flip up completely and I ahve never had water get in from it flapping around. Only thing is when its flapping you see light under it and it catches your eye in the rear view mirror.

 

I never put it on mine. Added velcro to the inner bed up front but never added it on the tailgate and never drilled the holes for the rivets up front. Never had an issue either. Its not necessary to add the rivets, but it is to at least have velcro on the cab side.

Yes if you plan on folding it down during travel. Just order the damn thing you won't regret it. I screwed my front flap down to the bed. Either way they are awesome. I've had 2!

I didnt have it and its the one thing I'd recommend. Its kind of flappy without and I secured mine with the nylon straps that are used to tension the topper. It was never perfect.

When I buy one for my Tundra I will make sure to get the cover.

 

Considering buying a softtopper. For those who camp in one, is it difficult to close from the inside? TIA

 

No. Some have added a strap or some type of handle to pull the tailgate up when inside. But zipping it up is not a problem. I sleep in it a lot.

 

no, zippers are dual sided so you can zip them down from inside. Pulling the tailgate up is the hardest part(Which is still a non issue) but a strap fixes that easily.

 

I just got the DAK tent from them for mine. I had one on my 98 that worked well. I am going to have to sort out the best place to plant the support poles in the bed though.

 

Thought I'd post a follow up pic of my topper after having it for over four years and 100K+ miles later. I've only cleaned it using the "rinse" option at the self-service car wash, never seen soap. I don't treat it with anything. You wouldn't know it but it's gotten pretty dirty. Back when I installed it, after reading some posts on here, I ran 2" industrial strength hook and loop the length of the inner flap for the front panel. Lined it up against the utility rail. Still holding strong. Treated seams with Seam Grip when I first got it, and once since. And also ran a magnetic strip as described here for the outer flap, and still working like on day one.


Also here is a view from inside - rear tinted window on the truck, clear front panel on the topper, mesh for the rear panel. I clean the topper's window using Sprayway's Glass Cleaner and a microfiber towel. It has stayed pretty scratch free. I also have a vinyl rear panel but rarely use it. Visibility is poor (compared to the mesh) when it’s raining, so I stick to the mesh and throw a tarp over the two feet nearest the tailgate if it’s raining hard. It’s worked for me.

 

I saw your post and decided to go look at mine. I installed my topper. I think you can get them pretty straight. It also looks like you have new and improved rails. May take a new and improved methodology.
