As much as I like and admire the Zetros, I don’t think you can draw any meaningful conclusions for the Tacoma from that example. Other factors in Mercedes’ decision may have been availability of parts throughout the world for this truck, familiarity of 3rd world markets with drum brakes, and similar factors that are unique to heavy trucks.

This again... Yes, I agree that these have drums for the sole fact that they are cheaper to put on. I would have taken a brake upgrade package if offered, especially if it also included larger fronts. Drums may hold static weight better, but most disc systems use a rear drum parking brake anyway. Discs dissipate heat better and have more effective braking power. They will last longer without brake fade when towing. Drums do hold in mud. I have had to take of drums to clean shit out after wheeling, and I have never had issues with discs in mud. Drums are a pain in the ass to change compared to disc and they weigh more. None of the other comparative vehicles have rear drums, including Toyota's own vehicles. This is the only vehicle I own newer than 1981 that has drums. FYI, we do this discussion like once a week.

The correct question is why are the others not using drums?

The rear disc system that combines the drum e brake is not only weak, but a pain to service, compared to standard drum rears... Just something to consider when looking at the greener grass.

Yes I am agreeing with you and because of this I said that Toyota maybe has the same reasoning, not necessarily of course.
I also just checked and it appears that the Hilux also uses drum brakes in the rear and maybe exactly for the reason you mentioned..to be serviceable in the middle of the bush. And then they maybe just copied the same thinking over to the Tacoma..maybe these are exactly the same brakes like on the Hilux.

I have never had to service the inner rear drum parking brake on any all-disc vehicle that I have owned, some of which I’ve daily driven for more than a decade. It really shouldn’t see a lot of use if you’re just pulling the parking brake handle when you’re parking, and not using the tiny drums for rally style drift turns (but I did that, too).

Yeah it’s kickin off. We’re fighting about words and how time works.

Yo if you were born in ‘79, and I was born in ‘80, who’s older?

Yes, you have to fit the same basic setup in there, but it's like working on a midget car and it's a pain in the ass to get everything stuffed in there. I had an Xterra 6 speed that had a slow axle leak and it would foul the parking brakes in short order. Found it in the neighbor's front yard one time when I forgot to put it in first. I got used to parking on flatter spots because it was a pain to change, but you couldn't get seals or bearings/races to rebuilt the rears, Nissan wanted to sell you an axle no one had part numbers for aftermarket.

Sure, the person born in 79 is clearly older in calendar years, but that doesn’t tell me which one of them is going to be the fuddy-duddy.

Yeah. They work, it’s just a pain, and their smaller area doesn’t have the grab that a basic ass Tacoma e brake has.

Apparently my grasp of the English language is fuddy-duddy, which *also* means older.
