Not upside down; at least not for a 1st gen application.

Pulled myself up by my shock bootstraps. Looks good now. Never found that missing bolt.

Sure looks like you have them on upside down. My Rancho's have the boot on top not the bottom..Same as the Bilsteins I just replaced.

Depending on the shock, some can go either way

Bilsteins list the 1st gen application as being boot down.

What mine looked like when I replaced them. Boot on top. My Rancho's are the same way.

    Those are 4600s, not 5100s

I'm using the photo as a reference how they looked when I replaced the original bilstein shocks that were on the truck when I bought the truck new in 03.

Bilstein 4600s are installed the way in which you described.

Bilstein 5100s however, are the shock in question; those are installed in the opposite manner than you describe.

This is from Bilsteins own literature when you purchase their 5100s.

    not really.
    Grade 5 is metric 8.8
    Grade 8 is metric 10.9
there is no equivalent 'Grade' for metric 12.9

You're absolutely right, I couldn't quote the grade because I forgot, thanks!

My 5100's are installed boot up. Why? Because I didn't really care when I installed them, and now I'm too lazy to fix it. It's been many years and they haven't exploded.

I'm afraid to touch them now, because knowing my luck, I'll take them off and flip them around and oil will dump out or something, at which point I'll "have to" get Kings to match the fronts...

Why would you get Kings in the rear if you're still on the factory leaf pack :luvya:

So the moral of the story is that my shocks are correct, my bolt is strong enough, and now I have other questions surrounding compressions tests and such. Shocks are so yesterday.

Just kidding, thanks for all the replies.

    Same here.
But there is a clicking noise ‘out back’ when cornering that has me wondering if it had to do with something with the mounting. And I greased the bushings where I probably shouldnt have. If I do a slight lift, may swap the configuration, just havent seen the Bilstein direction to install that way.

You have 5100's and are at stock height? I'd double check to make sure you have the RIGHT 5100s. Most of them (rear) are for 1-3" lift. I've heard, but not confirmed, that there are some newer P/N's that are for like 0-2" or something like that.

I have a 1" lift shackle, and my shocks seem pretty long, as the boots are pretty compressed.
