Brake control install write up.

I really like the off road functionality of it. I put my welding trailer through som crazy stuff building pipe fence. Will be nice to be able to lock the trailer brakes and dig the truck left or right using the trailer as an anchor.

 

I’m building this trailer for my RZR 4 seater. Is why I did my break controller install, I think is necessary if you pull anything with breaks

 

Good. That’s the one I have.

 

You want to be able make minute adjustments depending on what you are hauling. Perhaps you have a camper and a trailer...big difference in load, trailer GVW, etc.

 

I thought I’d post a few pics from my controller install.

Find factory plug behind drivers kick panel.



Plug in controller harness.



Mount controller. I used a 9/64 bit and machine screws. The just undersized bit allowed the machine screws to cut threads in the plastic.





Place washers and nuts on backside and tighten.







Mount controller.



Tuck wiring - I wedged it between fuse block and OBD plug.



Reinstall kick panel. All done.





There’s a thread out there on removing the cubby panel if you need it.

Lastly, thanks to all of the TW posters. Everything I don’t know how to do (which is a lot) is on TW. This forum is awesome!

 

Hey I just put the harness in and there’s a white wire . Do I ground that wire ?

 

What did you use for mounting the controller in the compartment? It looks very clean and original.

 

The manual indicates I have a connector for the trailer brake controller under the dash. Can I just plug it in here or will I need to go behind the kick panel as described above?

 

Really you should be able to reach your brake controller while operating the vehicle. You should be able to manually engage your trailer brakes. Why? Because if you for whatever reason start to have trailer sway, manually engaging the brakes could correct and stop it.

 

That's where you would plug in a code reader. That is not for brakes at all. Yes, you need to go behind the kick panel to the actual brake controller harness.

From where did you get the black plastic to which you mounted the knob? Also, how did you affix the plastic plate inside of the cubby?

 

Hi... I know this is an older thread, but I have a question. Can anyone take a picture of the plug? or point to where to order the harness. Amazon does not list any that "fit my vehicle", and I think the one I got is not right, because, although for a Toyota, it doesn't seem like the ones I see in the pictures here. I'd go out and check, but it has decided to rain for the first time in weeks here... If I have to order a new one, then I need to get it ordered ASAP.

Looks like a white blob in the picture. I know where roughly it is, just not what plug. Digging further, I'm 99.9% sure it's a 3031 plug harness. I went and got myself a 3040 harness; thanks to Amazon. I should have done more homework before hitting the order button on the weekend. That's my fault for being in a hurry.

 

That sucks, but it does happen.

One end of the trailer harness will fit the controller and the other will match and easily plug into the Taco harness. If it doesn't then you need to swap it.

 

I had U-Haul install the Pilot brake controller on the 18' 4R, . Now, with the new Tacoma getting here in 2 weeks, I am looking to do this myself. TRD-OR-4X4, with factory tow pkg. The white plug under the dash, accepts the adapter harness.
Looks straight forward, plug and play, make adjustments after mounting the unit.
Looking at the Tekonsha #90195 P-3. Any comments appreciated.

RedArc towpro brake controllers are also easy to install and look more like they came with your truck. I have the more basic towpro Liberty in mine been using it with a popup camper that has electric brakes it seems to working out.
