Rear Drums

Truth. There are things I would change (like rear discs), but when I am driving around seeing hundreds of other vehicles, there aren't many that I would straight trade my truck for including 6 figure rides.

 

It’s rad being stoked on what you drive. Because name any 6 figure ride (excluding a Geiser brothers trophy truck or similar) and I’m like... nah. I have more fun in my 4 banger. Hucking it through turns on dirt or asphalt and knowing it’s a little truck that has proportions that lend itself to not rolling over is awesome. WOT tucking under some forest canopy and disappearing into a hidden trail. You know. Tacoma things.

Agreed. I feel lucky that I get to drive what I really want. It sucks when you roll around ashamed of your ride, I did that when I was younger, but I couldn't afford anything better then. Some people hate driving, I think they must just have a vehicle they hate.

 

Guess I blew it buying a Tacoma. Sure couldn't tell while driving it.

Honestly I think alot of these people are first time new vehicle buyers. So was I. Maybe alot of them got hit or went into the work force around the last recession and were working themselves up to getting a new truck. Then they realized that maybe it doesn't fit the bill squeaks ect like you stated and feel like they've been had and got a 30kish truck but expecting a 100k Maserati

 

Every vehicle out there is compromised in some way. The perfect car or truck doesn’t exist on the market since we all have slightly different needs and preferences. For me, the Tacoma is the best of the worst. It’s a good platform to modify towards my ideal vehicle.

I bought a Tacoma knowing full well it had rear drums (when none of the competitors do). Are rear drums a design decision I would have made? No. I live in the mountains, where any additional braking capacity and resistance to heat fade is appreciated. I would have spent the extra dollars to specify discs, but if Toyota knows that isn’t a feature the majority of prospective buyers demand, Toyota will keep the drums because they’re cheaper.

It’s the same reason why you find drum brakes on the rear of a 2020 base model Kia Rio. They’re cheap.

A Kia Rio owner is not shopping for drum brakes due to their additional static holding power or (mythical) imperviousness to mud/stones/fairy dust.

 

I dunno I had plenty of dust in Rio. Makes me look forward to those trips!

 

When I had my Tacoma's, the worst was hauling a single potato, tying that fucker down, then trying to stop with those damn drum brakes.

 

Sounds like you tied it down wrong and the strap wasn’t giving you drag for stopping power. Live and learn I guess.

The 4th gen Tacoma is going to be an electric minivan with soccer ball storage because the designers will move the bed to the roof. Roof bed.


And @BearWithMe ...its still gonna have drums. It’s gonna suck for all of us.
