I purchased a 2020 OR about a month ago, as part of the deal, I had them order me a factory tonneau cover as it didn't come with one.

I've heard that you can't get a cover after the fact and only when it comes with the truck, but my dealership said they ordered one for me. I've been asking the dealership repeatedly for a month about when the cover is coming in and they keep coming back with "soon".

Am I getting the run-around or is it really just taking that long to receive?

FYI: I paid for the cover at a discount and is lumped into my loan (I have a 'we owe' sheet).

I'd get a firm date from them and if they don't supply it by then, get your money back and get a better one elsewhere.

    Personally I'd suggest a Lomax from @GotExhaust.

You're fine. Nothing is shipping fast. The OEM is worth the wait.

I was told from my local Toyota dealer that the oem trifold cover was assembled in factory and I would need every piece. I kindly said no thank you.

You want something like this instead. 100% removable, easy to reinstall, no drilling, no changing bed rails. Once it's on you can completely take it off in less than 60 seconds or put it back on in less than 5 minutes without tools.

https://www.autoanything.com/tonneau-covers/extang-solid-fold-2.0-tonneau-cover - Extang Sold-Fold 2.0 (comes with headrail weatherstripping caps)
https://www.autoanything.com/hitch-bed-accessories/69A3474A0A0.aspx - MaxSeal tailgate weatherstripping (a must-have whatever tonneau you get)

You can chat with the staff about a discount - they give at least 10%, sometimes 20%. I got mine with a 20% discount because I bought my steps through them too.

IIRC, it's a little bit of work to remove the OEM cover and get it back on straight.

When i ordered my 2020 tacoma built, it was one of the things i requested on it. Figured the factory tonneau cover was as good as any....just surprised what it weights.

OP, I think this is not true. I bought a 2020 TRD OR and it did not come with the OEM tonneau. The dealer installed it for me when I went to pick up the truck. I could be wrong but I think it is the OEM tonneau even though it has the Extang logo on it. Can someone verify? Works well and is easy hook and unhook and does not require the removal of the bed rails at all. I am generally happy with the quality and ease of use.

That said, I wish I didn't get it. I wish I would have either gotten the kind that roll up or just sprung for a soft topper. The reason is that I have the short bed (don't ask!) and when you fold it all the way forward it eats a lot of reachable bed space. Not a huge deal but I could have gotten a soft tonneau that rolls all the way to the front making it far easier to access the bed or just got the soft topper which you can fold all the way forward.

Might be worth getting the credit and looking elsewhere ... unless you are okay with that ...

    I don't think that's the OEM cover.

OP: you may want to ensure that they are getting you the OEM and not an aftermarket cover. Or at least to make sure they are not marking up the price of the non-OEM cover.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I'll get in touch with them and give them a deadline and see if it's actually OEM.

My dealer told me they could not get an OEM cover, and that one one can, and installed an aftermarket one on my truck. Sounds like the rails are different???

There are special rails that the OEM cover needs. That's why they say that if it wasn't built for the factory cover you need an aftermarket. The rails can be replaced...but most dealerships don't want to go through that.

IMHO, there are SO MANY quality aftermarket covers that are much easier to use than the OEM cover for the same quality and security that it's probably better to go aftermarket anyway.

I just looked at my parts receipt...its got the part number 50289-83830 from Toyotaaap. Looking it up that correlates to:

5028983830 Extang - Solid Fold 2.0 Truck Bed Cover, Hard Folding (16-19 Tacoma, 5ft Bed). I guess it is aftermarket, I think I'm going to ask for a cancellation or do you guys think I should keep it?

That's a great cover (see my post above). I've had one on my truck for 4 1/2 years now with no problem. I even have some lessons learned about it in my (largely ignored) build thread.

I had the OEM come with my OR. It has Tacoma printed on the end by the tailgate. It only has a latch to open it on the driver side and it only opens to give you 2/3rds access to your bed. For full access it has to be removed. If I had to do it over again I’d rather a different aftermarket cover. The best thing about it so far is that it hasn’t leaked when it has rained.

Love my OEM cover. Fit and finish is far superior to aftermarket in my opinion. It completes the look, factory cover sides more square. I personally just like the looks.

Personally I’d ask the dealer to swap for an OEM cover from a truck on the lot. It’s a simple swap. Extang like all aftermarket covers have clamps the drop down into the bed and can be total PITA depending on how you use your bed. But It is decent quality, and at least you don’t need to move the bed rails like some covers. IMO the OEM has a vastly superior mounting system to any other cover out their.

Would I need any special rails for that swap? I'll ask them about it, but I'm confident they'll tell me to go pound sand :annoyed:

My 2019 came with Tonneau, and I ended up selling it. The person who purchased it told me the same. He had wanted the oem tonneau and they didn't have any on the lot. They come from the factory, or they dealership can swap them with another truck if available/needed to close the deal(due to the rails). I swapped out all of the hardware with the buyer when I sold the tonneau.

I had cover thrown into deal of my 2020 Sport . They gave me same line, so they gave a backflip installed by shop next to dealer. I love the finish and like the fact that it sits flush. Good luck man, I’d stay on top of dealer .
