I want to get into fishing.

Can anyone advise me what to get, where to get it, and where to go fish?

I'm just trying to realize my vision for a perfect day off:
    wheel to a lake
    drink some beer
    catch some fish

Bass pro shop have some decent rod and reel combo sets under $75 right now. It’ll be an all round setup. Get your license online. If you wanna go explore and fish, I’ll join you. I’m off all week and can make the time.

Thanks! Any specific rod and reel combo I should look for?

Also, if I buy the FL online, all I'll need to do is print it out?

I started with a spinning reel with a medium light 7’ and 6.6’ rod. I’ve caught bass, stripe bass, sting rays, crappies, all sorts of fish.

There’s no one particular setup I’d recommend. Go check some out, touch and get a few for it. Find one that feels good for you.

the more you fish...the more you’ll learn and know exactly what you want in the future.

heck! I started with a cheap $10 flea market ugly stick with rusty old hooks lol.

yes just print it out the license and if you select a hard copy, it’ll arrive in the mail in 14 days.

I do recommend if you ever come across a good tax return or bonus check, spend that $800 on a lifetime license.

I’l no fishing pro, but just excited for you.

every question depends on what species you want to target. Except beer, that’s always easy. :p

check out this thread for fishing related info. Lots of good info and resources.

Any of you guys fly fish? Finally brought out a handful of my fishing gear from the midwest, but am new to fly fishing. Have a couple spinning reels, too. But I know very little about local fisheries and have no buddies that fish so learning it all on my own.

If anyone wants a fishing buddy, let me know!

Picked up a starter set for bass fishing at Big 5.

Bass PRO had a super snarky, gatekeeper type working at the fishing dept.

Also, ordered my fishing license and will print out the temp one tonight.

Where should I head out first and when would be the best time to go?

can’t say I’ve ever talked to staff at bass pro. Read blogs, watch videos, listen to what others use and buy an assortment. Every body of water is different. Simple Weather conditions can change a fish’s preference. Really comes down to buying/trying out different methods and seeing what works.

find a lake/pond near you and look into what baits world well for that type. Bank? Boat? Shade? Sun? Cover? Grass? Docks? Temp? A day on YouTube or just getting out fishing can tell you everything you need to know. It’s all experiences and learning from past experiences.

@techfinsoup If you were to head out to fish bass tomorrow morning (and you couldn't take a boat out), where would you go?

oh you’re close. I’m down in Rancho at the moment. If you can get up there, Cameron Park lake has a decent bass population. Caught 4 the other day. 2 on plastics, 1 on dropshot, 1 on a crank bait. They’ve got an assortment of bank/dock/pontoon spots.
There’s also Lake Natoma which is smaller, I use the boat ramp entrance near Willow Creek on Folsom Blvd. Otherwise Folsom lake and both rivers have ample spots.
