Hard disagree. Being in shape, riding 3-4 times a week makes climbing suck WAY less than when you're an out of shape accountant that rides once a weekend. Still not fun though.

I agree to this. I can tell you at the top of the climbs they all looked much happier than I felt lol

It's kind of a joke. Just saying it always sucks you just get faster is obviously an oversimplification. But it never stops sucking.

Sounds like Pinkbike has a review coming up that could include a lot of the new short-travel 29ers. They included this note at the bottom of their Revel Ranger post today:

"We have one of these on test in our upcoming XC Field Test (in the downcountry category). Stay tuned!"

Edit: Here's a list of "downcountry" 29ers I've been putting together:
    1. GIANT Trance Advanced Pro 29
    2. Yeti SB115 (upcoming release?)
    3. Revel Ranger
    4. Transition Smuggler (upcoming refresh)
    5. Ibis Ripley v4
    6. Pivot Trail 429
    7. Santa Cruz Tallboy
    8. Guerrilla Gravity Trail Pistol
    9. Orbea OIZ M10 TR
    10. YT Izzo
    11. Scott Spark XC/Trail
    12. Banshee Phantom v3
    13. Evil The Following
    14. Specialized Stumpjumper ST
    15. Jamis Portal
    16. Canyon Neuron

Very curious about the SB115 and the Smuggler refresh!

115-130mm you mean right? (first three on your list are all 115 i think)

I bet the incoming Smuggler is more a competitor to the SB130 since even the outgoing model was running a Fox 36, and I'd put the GG Pistola in the same category too, unless you meant to say Trail Pistol.

Hi you hard-core bike riders. I bought a couple of Diamondback trail cruisers literally 25 years ago. I use them once in awhile. They are mechanically sound with everything working perfect. We are a couple of 60+ year olds that have been invited to ride a dirt rail trail and pavement. Nothing hard and mostly coasting one way. I'm not comfortable running on 25 year old tires and my whole trip will be hell if my wife's bike has a non-repairable blowout. I need 4 new tires and tubes. Here's the rub.

The stuffy bike shop by my house doesn't seem to help me. They say my bikes are old (they are but work like new and they've never seen them) and I should of course buy some $1,000 x 2 bikes instead. Not going to happen. My old tires are WTB Primal Raptors and the size is a weird 26 x 47/50. The bike shop says they don't have that size. Google is no help finding what 47/50 is vs. the 26 x 2.1-2.x. Is that second number metric mm so 26 x 1.8/2.0? They kind of said these one tires might work and are 26 x 2.1 but they only had 2 (need 4) and were $58 each. What does the 47/50 represent and is there an equivalent in a modern bike tire?

That's not fair.....let's see the bikes, not just part of a wheel. Just get some 26x2.1's or 26x1.95's or even 26x1.8 off ebay of your choosing and enjoy that ride. Get new tubes and extra for the ride. Should be plenty of tires to choose from and differing tread from gnarly tractor tread like you have to bald slicks. Get some that will fulfill most of your riding needs most of the time and make due with them in variances from that from time to time.

The 47/50 is from GMS "Global Measuring System"

the 47 is the width of the casing at the sidewalls in millimeters, and the 50 is the widest measurement of the tread knobs. 2.1s would probably work as that's only about 1/8 inch over what you currently have, but you'd have to look at the tire as its mounted on the bike to make sure it wouldn't rub the chainstays, etc.

    ...stuff
I was hoping they’d release a bigger 29er next. Hopefully in the next few weeks, or a short travel 27.5

Painted my Thule trays black. They look sooo much better. Boggles my mind they never made that an option or initially made them that way.

    not enough.

one thing you can do is measure the tire width with a measuring tape and see what is closest. 2.1s are common and sometimes even though they say "2.1", they're not really 2.1 wide they're sometimes a little thinner. Sounds like the bike shop didn't really know what to do with 47/50's. old system. but most tires should still be able to mount up with tubes. that hasn't changed much. :D

heading to southern California for a few days around the 4th; anybody know if there's any must-ride trails out there? I'll be in Orange County area, but I'm driving so will have pretty good range for a day trip depending on the fun factor.

That looks like an awesome weekend. I hope to see some good videos of some trails. I know @stronghammer had the go pro running.

Sadly I did not. Friday when we rode it was so muddy I couldn’t film or the lens would have stayed covered, and Saturday I assumed it would be the same. It ended up being a nicer day but I was getting gassed so quickly and behind the guys riding so well that video wouldn’t have been any good. I just decided not to try and video anything and just enjoy the ride, the trails, and the company.

Just scooped a 32t chainring off facebook for $20. Nice part of eagle is that 50t granny gear gives you options up front.

Now whats the odds my chain is too small by 2 links? The same 2 links I just popped out of the chain when I installed eagle last week...and then threw away...

I was referring to the forks with the 120-130; but yeah, the shocks would make them 115-130, which is more accurate.

And yes, I definitely meant the new Trail Pistol with the 120/130 setup, not the Pistola. Good catches!
