If you're like me, you can relate to my frustration about the lack of big cupholders in our beloved 3rd gens. Once upon a time I had a sweet sweet 2nd gen (manual trans) with an integrated big-cup holder right there in the console... those were the days.

To ease my frustration, I've spent a considerable amount of time looking for a good solution. I'm all about details, so I can't stand those cheap adapters on amazon (don't @ me).

Here's what I came up with - I hope you enjoy it as much as I do:

    What you need:

    1. Chalk bag(s) - I recommend testing fit with your bottle / cup of choice before buying. They come in many different sizes- if you find one that works for you, post it here!

I purchased these from REI and can verify that 32oz Nalgene, Hydroflask, or any other similarly sized canteen will fit perfectly. They also have a draw string which can be adjusted to secure smaller bottles.

Edit: Everyone on TW has had a fantastic experience using the same bags from Static Climbing Co. I recommend ordering directly from their website or Etsy to help support them. They have excellent customer service, you can reach out the owner, Taylor (taylor@staticclimbing.com) for customization options she's helped define with some of our members (shout out to @RyanDCLB).

    2. Scrap bolt, pencil, etc - a perfect use for those extra center pins you have laying around.

    Install:

Step 1: Put your scrap center-pin through the opening in the harness loops. This will prevent the loops from pulling out.

Step 2: Separate the top and bottom portion of your console ***by hand***, it doesn't take much force to override the clips. Pull up from above the parting line.

Step 3: Hang your chalk bag by placing the harness loops into the gap you've opened. Make sure you don't cover up the holes for the console clips.

Step 4: Re-seat the top portion of your console by pushing down, double check that you haven't blocked any clips. It should seat easily.

Step 5: Enjoy never having to chase bottles around the floor board again.

    OPTIONAL STEP 2.1
If you're OCD (and let's be honest, you are), you've probably noticed that he thickness of the loops may leave a slightly larger gap between the console segments. This can be resolved by removing some excess material from the console with a Dremel (not the visible portion, on the inside!).. This step is completely optional, it is not necessary unless the gap really bothers you.

Nice fix! Off to check the status of unused chalk bags in the garage....

I like this. I bought a cup holder adapter and it melted and deformed from the heat...

Niiice! I know I have some old lens cases around here that would work as well.

I made an account to say this is amazing and I'll be doing it soon for the wife's giant water bottles. Thanks, for the great idea!

This is a good idea. I like the side saddle approach to this little problem.

And they deflate when empty! Coolness.

Suddenly there’s going to be a run on REI online.

Looks like you are using a 32 oz hydro flask? If so, that means it’ll fit my 48 oz nalgene which would be awesome

Keep in mind there's different sized chalk bags. Big buckets to tiny ultralight ones.

yep, very true. I updated the post to emphasize the need to test fit before buying.

If anyone finds other bags that work for common bottles / cups, post them here for other members.
