255/85/16

I'm going to be getting new tires in the next week or 2. Looking at going with the 255/85/16 on my 19 off road. I really have my heart set on the ST Maxx, but I can get the KM3s from Toyota and they're buy 3 get 1 for a dollar, which would be a significant savings.

I live in Maine, so we get a shit load of snow, ice, and every other type of precipitation. Would the Cooper's suit me better than a true mud terrain? They also run a little smaller if I'm correct, so fitment would be slightly easier as well.

Any insight is appreciated, just trying to with the pros and cons before dropping that much money

 

I wouldn't run KM3s in the snow, personally.

That's what's really making me wonder about them. And longevity as well. I've run mud terrains in snow,and they weren't awful, but not great either.

 

Are those Maxxis bighorns? How do you like them?

 

You can always just run two sets of tires like I do.

Makes the MTs last longer when they sit in the garage half the year..

 

Yes, so far so good. Not major mud action but some. They are loud, but it is what it is. Couldn’t pass up the price.

 

The KM3s are a true Mud Terrain, so I would not run them in the snow.

I have the ST Maxx in 255/85/16....they are in between a Mud Terrain and All Terrain. Great tires, and I’d buy them again, but I do not run them in the winter here in Minnesota. I have a winter set of tires for that. I used to live in PA and I wouldn’t choose the ST Maxx for that winter either.

If you want 255s in a one-and-done tire, check out the Falken Wildpeaks in 255/80/17.

 

I'm really trying to avoid buying new wheels, or I'd check them out. I kind of like the stock OR wheels, and they're a sweet spot for fitment for that tire size I've heard

 

You’re absolutely right, they are. Unfortunately there aren’t great all-year 255 tire options for us up north.

If you’re only between the ST Maxx and KM3, the ST Maxx will do better in winter. I wouldn’t say they’ll be good, but they’ll be better than the KM3s

Absolutely! Regardless, I'm sure whatever I go with will be better than the stock tires. I haven't had good luck with these at all. Damn near worn out with 22k on them, rotated properly as well. I was down to 3/32 a little over a month ago. I might bitch at Toyota a little more about it haha

 

My girlfriend only got 18k out of hers.

I got like 200 miles out of mine.. then I put DC Extreme Countries on it.

 

I love my Toyo Open Country MTs in 255/85R16 (25k miles on them thusfar); though, I have zero exposure to snow in Houston. Lots of precipitation and water though, they work fine on wet roads.

My buddy in Oklahoma/New Mexico loves the Cooper ST MAXXs on his truck and he has to deal with snow periodically and doesn't have any complaints with them. The Coopers were designed to fill that gap between a AT and a MT.

 

I ran ST Maxx last 2 winters in that size. We got a decent amount of snow the first winter and I towed in a bad storm across KS and MO. They are acceptable in snow, but not great. I have Toyo Open Country AT2 on my 4runner and they are better in snow and wet pavement (interested in the AT3 as well). The ST Maxx is better everywhere else. I will probably buy again unless I go full M/T.

 

Id go ST Maxx again in a heartbeat. And I never had an issue with them in the snow, and we get plenty in Utah.

 

That sounds about right....true ATs will be better in winter than MT/AT Hybrids like the ST Maxx

You guys get all the good fluffy stuff. Icey slushy nonsense out east and here in the midwest is a different game. Wish we got that kind of snow out here.
