Currently on my second diff, now up to 7k and it’s just as loud as the first replaced at 8k. They have now deemed it a normal characteristic and refuse anymore repairs. Dang thing has become an ice pick when I drive. It’s my only real complaint about the truck but damn it’s annoying. I have added all new speakers and a under seat sub but it won’t drown it out!

Like so many others on here, my second diff started out church pew quiet and wound up louder than the first one. The only “solution” in my mind would be either mud tires or noise cancelling headphones. I understand this is upsetting to a lot of people but these diffs are just noisy. Mine drove me crazy enough to where I sold it. Looking back maybe I should have taken my own advice and stuck a set of MTs on it. Best of luck to everyone and let us know if you get a true fix. I hate to be pessimistic but I’m betting those new diffs will be just as loud.

Put some OEM racks on top and cant hear s*** over them when the cross bars are out. They were surprisingly loud.

Replace your leaf springs dudes and lose your whine(s). LOL. Seriously though.

TSB or aftermarket? My noise TSB leafs helped a little and Icon RXT’s eliminated all of it

Wow that's great man. Was your howling noise the same as everyone else's here? (45-58 ish, light to moderate acceleration)

Mine was primarily during coasting off the gas in those and other speed ranges. I sometimes had it on really light acceleration on decline or flat ground, but the coasting whine drove me absolutely nuts.

I should add I also had that kazoo noise in the 30’s that was solved by the TSB that put plugs in the lower a arms

Just for S&G's I'm going to throw this out there...

2020 TRD Pro, our first Taco and we love it..
Inspecting the underside I notice a 2 piece driveshaft with a carrier bearing.
Conclusion: the carrier bearing, while unloaded (coasting), transfers rotational reverberations which are transmitted through the bed, which acts as a speaker, which amplifies the sound.

Anyone with a cap or bed cover notice this sound?

For what its worth i had the same driveshaft arrangement on my 01 tundra as i do on my 2020 taco. The tundra never had a bed cover and the new taco has. Both do not howl. However the tundra had some vibration which was cause by poor factory alignment of the center carrier driveshaft bearing which was corrected by the dealer in warranty.

I’ve got the factory (garbage) tonneau, on or off doesn’t make much difference. Loading the bed makes it louder, if anything

UPDATE: I picked my truck up from the dealer this afternoon. The ride home was very quiet. I checked under the car and all looks good. I thought they were going to replace the whole rear end and man was I wondering how they were going to get it back to me so quickly. However, they only replaced the center portion that comes out the front and attaches to the drive shaft. I believe it is called the carrier section. Let's hope it stays quiet.

This is the conundrum of the diff whine. If Toyota was truly standing by “the whine is normal” BS, dealerships wouldn’t still be replacing differentials. Toyota calls it a normal yet they replace a differential on a 2020 truck?!?! Something is wrong with this picture. Between two trucks Ive had 4 differentials and they all whine. The problem is the between the differential and cab mount being a Toyota material/ design issue. They would rather screw their customers instead of spending the money to fix this f***up/cheaper parts.

Also, why will they not update the TSB for 2019 - 2020?? They will throw differentials at it all day but not try a attempted fix from toyota?

I would try the icon leaf springs but I would need a guarantee it would alleviate the whine. if I spent that kind of money and I still heard it I would lose my shit!! would be nice if a few people could verify that fixes it. I’m guessing those leaf springs aren’t made of cheap recycled shit metal and that stops the harmonic vibrations.

My 2020 already had the TSB updated parts on it from the factory. My carrier was still replaced due to whining.

Mine has the leafs, but not the body mounts or the insulation pad. Pulled the back apart to prove it to dealership. After that they said the whine is normal operation of the truck and they won’t install the remaining TSB parts since 2019 is not covered. Not that i think it will work.

I just lifted and did 5.29 gears on mine. It still has the EXACT same howl. IT is in no way related to the gears that is impossible. Nitro Gear and East Coast Gear say its just some weird harmonic from the diff regardless of the gear ration etc.

I still say its too thin of axle tubes causing the harmonics. Wish there was some way to check axle tube thickness of earlier 2nd gen tacomas against axle tube thickness of 3rd gen.
