I did this about 2 weeks ago with Houston Overland. Isn't it about 20 miles of beach? First couple miles was very loose sand but not bad after that.

 

What is Houston Overland? Sounds fun. Shell Banks from the mouth of the Colorado River is about 11.5 miles north up the beach. 20 miles is probably Brown Cedar Cut. Good fishing and big toothy fish. I go to Shell Banks to surf so the water is usually pushing up high on the beach all the way and requires 4x4 the whole way. Even 4x4s get stuck during high surf periods down there.

 

Yeah, we went all the way to the cut. Houston Overland are basically a bunch of "get off the beaten path", "let's go camping" kinda guys. There is also Texas Overland which is MUCH bigger. FB groups if you do that. I do more FB that this forum stuff. Easier but more BS.
Definitely needed 4wd on our trip. I got a timewarp video coming back that i'll try to post.

Thanks for posting that! I'm itching to go now. We are lucky that we have so many endless miles of desolate beach that we can go 4Wheelin'.

Before y'all cross the bridge, stop at the gas station/souvenir shop to get your beach pass so you can drive on the beach.

That's what we did but they were selling them at entry to beach also. I tried to fill my gas tank there also. Waiting 10 minutes to pump $1.20 in gas

 

In my opinion, PINS is a better beach. Longer, more desolote areas. But it also depends where you are coming from and what is convenient. We also did Surfside (too crowded) and San Luis Pass a week ago. Girls beach run on July 18th for my wife with her new Limited at Crystal beach, north of Galveston. She's gonna take me though.
