Our trucks stop in about the same distance as all the other trucks in the Mid-Sized Truck Category so what's the difference.

ever drive the ones with 4 wheel drums? Took about a day to stop and if you drove them hard, it was about a week, brake fade was horrible

They’ll probably place them them below The bed. The spare tire might be a goner or a donut.

All that work for the smallest of returns... because the disc rear are doing the same amount of work.

I would hope most people who swap to disc rear do it for looks and not for increased braking power. Because if they actually DID get more rear braking power, it could be dangerous. The proportions vs weight vs all the other math has been worked out by people who do maths and sciences. Fortunately for me, I don’t have to worry about dialing those numbers in, because my truck came dialed from the factory. Weird.

I think a lot of the bro-sci is a result of a printer repair man thinking he moonlights as an automotive engineer. I mean. How hard could it be.

It's actually near the bottom for braking and once loaded becomes worse. The loaded down weight test showed it about double the amount of distance added compared to the competition.

While I don't think it's worth the effort to swap them the proportioning is no longer done via a valve the computer does it and adjusts it on the fly.

Point is, you’re not getting more rear braking.

Here you go. Tacoma is 4th out of 5 empty and the other 4 on average added 4 feet when loaded down. The Tacoma added 8.9 and taking the longest to stop loaded. Despite it having the 2nd lowest amount of weight added.

    https://news.pickuptrucks.com/2016/08/2016-midsize-pickup-challenge-acceleration-and-braking.html

"The Tacoma was on the other end of that spectrum with a very high brake pedal and almost all of its force delivered in the top third of pedal travel. Beyond that, it was the sketchiest to haul down from speed; it was the only one where I needed to apply steering correction when the back end stepped out during a loaded run. The Tacoma was a bit old school in terms of brakes. It was the only truck with rear drum brakes, which seems an odd technology to retain in a redesigned 2016 model."

Am I reading this right? It took 147’ to do a 60-0 for your site? Because the Edmunds guys rates it as a 123-132’ range for 60-0:
Braking comments: You have to expect a certain level of dive/pitch when it comes to a panic stop in a truck and the Tacoma is no exception. The first stop took 123 feet and extended to 132 feet after five back-to-back stops. The ABS is quiet but you notice some shuddering. Stops still feel stable and require no steering corrections. The Tacoma didn't generate odor or fade, though the pedal did get firm. I did notice some brake odor during the following acceleration runs, but no major degradation of braking performance.“

It’s like MPG, I guess. Sometimes it’s how much you suck at something. (I’m a better MPGr.) Can we talk about who is the best braker here?

“So somebody asked me why we kept drum brakes in the rear.

Disc brakes on the rear are great, but they’re mainly used for heat.

The second reason on the compact market is for towing. So we don’t have a whole lot of towing usage. We don’t need to dissipate that heat with rotors

But what we do need to do is protect those caliper and rotors or the brake system from getting sand in it or rocks in it.”

I have no idea who this guy is though. Engineer for Toyota?

Not sure how hard it is to mash a brake pedal down but to be honest I don't really care... Despite being a little worse than the competition they're fine to me. Simply pointing out despite all of the excuses made here for the drums the Tacoma (for whatever reason) doesn't brake as well as the competition.

So, are we to believe that Wrangler owners do a lot of towing and don’t need “rock and sand protection”?

Mike Sweers can give us the corporate line, but ultimately this is cost-cutting measure. Drum brakes aren’t good, but they are (probably) good enough.

    Thanks, Toyota.
