    Buy once cry once. I've bought two gradually larger ones till I lucked into a free 15 gallon one, big enough for everything I need for light air tool use. If I need a bigger one I would get a 20 or 30 gallon husky ones, good for the price and has a small footprint.

    If you need portable vlair is king.

    I have a Viair 380C.

    However, I find that a scuba tank is far more convenient. I rarely even use a compressor in my garage anymore. No plugging in, no waiting for tanks to fill......

    $790. :duh: Not exactly budget friendly is right.


    I have a SuperFlow that I bought several years ago. Works, was cheap, but it is slow. I recommend Viair and spend the extra $10-20. It's a much better pump. Currently I'm converting a used mounted Viair 400 to portable.

    One suggestion, get one that clamps directly onto your battery. The ones that will plug into the cigarette lighter are way too slow and have too short of a duty cycle for trucks.

    I don't know for sure, but based on my search for a portable 12v compressor a few years ago it seemed that they were all the same with different labels. Looking at the specs and design is seemed that they were identical except for color & labeling. Based on that, I bought one for about $ 30 and keep it under the rear seat. I have had to use it several times. It fill the 16" tires in a few minutes. That plus a plug kit has saved me having to change to the spare more than once. I would suggest that anyone who travels on dirt roads keep one in the truck. In New England, where I live, slate and granite shards seem to run out into the middle of the road to try and attack your tire.

    No reputable dive shop is going to fill an out of hydro tank to any useful pressure and one would need to get a rather robust regulator to make a tank with enough pressure to be worth keeping around useful. Assuming the tank is free, the regulator and hose would cost what a descent compact electric compressor costs. An in hydro aluminum 80cf tank is like $150+ without a valve or regulator. Plus about $20 every 5 years for hydro test, assuming it doesn't fail.
