Missing Transmission cooler.

Trucks change From year to year. If the tow rating is the same the tow rating is the same. I can’t imagine Toyota is going to install an aftermarket cooler for free.

You didn’t get ripped off unless they advertised the truck having an air to oil transmission cooler as part of the tow package.

 

That very well may be, but I'd like to hear that from Toyota. When the dealer is left scratching their heads, this wasn't a well-communicated change and I think it's important as consumers to ask questions. These trucks aren't inexpensive and I think we should be advocates for ourselves until we get some answers.

 

Toyota already said they found it wasn't needed in testing when they removed it from the Tundra a year or two ago. I'm sure you'd get the same response from them on the Tacoma. The video was posted somewhere in this thread.

 

I await their response. If that's the case, then so be it. I might still get one installed just for my peace of mind when pulling through the mountains.

 

I agree with this response. However, what changed from 2/20 to 3/20? I have one and I have the 2/20 build date. It appears that trucks with the 3/20 build date do not. Or better yet. Do some trucks with a build date of 3/20 have them and some do not? Just would like to see a response to why they stopped. Seems simple enough.

 

No ATF cooler now,yet the Tacoma prices are still going up,what a joke.

 

I know it has been said before, BUT Toyota is still advertising that across all models of TACOMA the towing package has an ATF Cooler excluding the manual transmission. So to me they should issue a TSB or at least remove that from their online literature. However in my experience Toyota is not the best at updating the public on their changes. When I bought my 2014 regular cab I thought that the access cab would have been nice if they were similar in price +- ~$800 I would have went up to the access cab, however Toyota was shipping 2015 SR with seat deletes before their website said it was an option available. Hind sight is 20/20 and I think Toyota will soon clarify whats going on with the ATF cooler but until then... we can only assume.

 

It still has a trans cooler they just eliminated the extra one.

I commend people for contacting Toyota. That said, I can just about guarantee that the response will be that there was a specification change and that's that.

Can always hope for a different result though I suppose.

 

As was said, the automatic trucks still have an ATF cooler, they just have 1 cooler instead of 2.

Unfortunately, and I wish it wasn't the case, manufacturers don't typically publish any running changes to dealers or otherwise unless there is a specific reason to do so. (My guess is that after all of the people asking about it, Toyota will probably send a bulletin to dealers in the next few months).

Semantics. Internal or External I want to see evidence of either. Especially if it's listed on an official published marketing document.

Also, I know what the external one looks like. Has anyone on here posted a picture of what the internal cooler looks like, or where exactly it's located?

Here's another question. If they removed the external cooler and put it inside the main engine cooling radiator, wouldn't this reduce the fluid capacity of that? Now I understand that the engine and transmission temperatures are almost the same, but it just seems to me that combining them and expecting them to operate at the same temp simultaneously safely is a risk.

I am not a mechanic and don't proclaim to be an expert at any of this either. I'm just offering my opinions and years of vehicle use experience.

 

Vehicle manufacturers have used a portion of the radiator to provide fluid cooling/warming for Automatic Transmissions for 60+ years. This isn't new technology or a recent change for the 2020 Tacoma. There has always been an internal ATF cooler in a portion of the radiator.

 

My guess is getting ready for the MY changeover. They probably used up existing stock and then discontinued.
I'm into classic mustangs. It was not uncommon to find the next MY parts in the previous MY and vice versa.

If you’re going to be towing hard, you would want an aftermarket one anyways. The dinky stock one wasn’t doing a hell of a lot.

There has to be someone with an ultra gauge and a third gen with no external cooler. It would be interesting to see if the temps were any different.
