    I digress SR5 Superhero,

It was about a Fumoto oil change valve - and while I was here I got good info about the remote starter which I ultimately purchased. Pardon me. I use this forum as a tool - not a social community to spend day in and day out finding uninformed average joe truck owners to rag on. Thus, I forgot exactly what I posted almost a year ago.

*waiting for post about how stupid I must be to confuse the topic of my year old post*

I didn't read the three pages of replies but here is my take:

This is a heavy truck with a rather anemic engine cobbled together between the classic Otto engine and the economical Atkinson Cycle engine. The idea was to have the best of both worlds: Power (Otto engine) and Economy (Atkinson). Instead, it has the worst of both engines. Horrible fuel economy (Otto) and pathetic torque (Atkinson). This engine works great in the SUVs it was designed for, but not a truck. Soooo that is one thing.

The other is obviously the circa 1990's six speed auto. Because of the weak power of the engine and a limited number of gears all Tacoma trucks hunt up and down the gears on the slightest incline. I'm talking a mild, interstate incline, not a mountain grade. My 4.0 did it and my 159 hp 2.7 does it. They all do it.

These trucks are designed for pool guys and lawn guys to drive around the neighborhood and they will run 1,000,000 miles doing that. Asking if for anything more and the truck's deficiencies come out loud and clear (as you discovered).

Yes, the acceleration after the slow poke in the lane ahead of you moves over is stupid. You should be in a 4,300 lb 4x4 Tacoma with the 2.7...the engine SCREAMS as it accelerates back up to your set speed.

I knew all this but still bought. Reliability my friend. Resale..I keep saying that to myself but honestly, the 325 hp 400lb ft torque of Ford's 2.7 EcoBeast and 10 speed auto is kinda in the back of my head.

I finally said screw it...have a stainless steel bodied truck on order (#133,043 on the list) that will tow 14,000 lbs, runs on cheap electrons and is faster than my 911 Turbo was ;-)

Right...it is a tool, that you use for free and expect other people who aren't getting paid by you or anyone else to answer your questions or respond to your complaints. They get "paid" by the community affiliation and general enjoyment of talking trucks with like minded people. If all you want is a "tool", go complain to a dealer service manager. You want to act like an entitled millennial, go ahead, but don't expect regulars (read knowledgeable) in this "community" to just give you free info if you're not willing to give anything back or follow typical forum etiquette.

And honestly, it's not that you posted this thread that's the problem, it's your reaction to everyone giving you a hard time that's the problem and the fact that you couldn't figure out how to search (c'mon man...).

Lots of cosmetic upgrades, cause I’m a whore like that.
Holy crap! Glad I finally came across this link, now I know it wasn't just me or just my Tacoma. Dealership was anything but helpful...

    https://www.ovtuned.com/blogs/news/...-tacoma-transmission-and-how-we-are-fixing-it

I had the same issue with wonky/unexpected gear changes and bogging. After 20k miles she seems to have learned my style or I have learned her style. Either way it's no where near as annoying as it was when she was new. And yes, I test drove it for a day and didn't notice it. Probably because I was babying the throttle.

I can speak to the resale. The 2010 I originally spoke of got broadsided. Hit the front end just before my driver’s side and took out half of the front end. Had 85k miles on it.

Not only did I walk away unharmed by the grace of God, but I got $22k check for a 10 year old truck.

So, the intrinsic safety and resale value stuck with me for sure when I repurchased.

I can relate to your sentiment. While I may have missed some concerns about the transmission, I went right back to Toyota for my next truck because I paid ~$12k to have a truck for 10 years. Tough to beat that.

Guessing my conclusion is that I’ll have to suck it up and choose to deal with a jumpy ride, or sell it and move into a different ride like you said.

Let’s get those tomatoes ready again - but does anyone know if the Tundra is experiencing similar issues? Sounds like it’s specific to this engine/transmission combination.

Do yourself a favour and don't engage 'ol Bill. He gets off on it.... well that and all the gaslighting.

    Shellshock's advice is solid.

If it is a really big deal to you, you should probably trade it in for something else. Otherwise you're just going to throw big money at the problem with no guarantee of it ever performing like you think it should.

You're welcome. It's a tough crowd here. People who have no interest in the subject start cackling like the women on The View.

Dang! Truth is painful. Only thing I'd add that it's only a software issue with the ECM. V6 & transmission are rock solid and powerful. Stick it in S-Mode 3, and leave it there as you buzz through town. Plenty of torque and power.

S-Mode is about elimination of gears (5th & 6th), and remapping the shift points. Learn to drive in 3rd or 4th... And leaving it there. It's a torqued up work horse.
