I’m looking into getting a cargo trailer. It’s 1500lbs dry weight. Loaded will be around 3000lbs. Should I get a trailer brake?? I have a 2019 Tacoma sport V6

Look at your state requirements, you may be required to have trailer brakes. I have towed close to that and it does start to feel heavy.

So, are you asking whether you should get a trailer brake controller, or install brakes on a trailer you are considering, or buy a trailer with trailer brakes?

Because Yes, Look for option c instead, and Yes.

I mostly tow in the 2800-3500 pound range, and this truck can and does experience brake fade in heavy traffic and long hills. I have been grateful for the extra help from those trailer brakes a number of times.

Absolutely get trailer brakes. They make stopping a trailer much more comfortable. I like the Prodigy P2 controller over the P3, simply because the P2 has the ability to mount in more angles/positions. For 3rd gen though, i think there are some more newer options that look pretty cool and integrate well with the dash cubby.

I tow 3-4000lbs regularly on a car hauler (EDIT: Including the hauler) with my 2nd Gen. I've had the connection to the trailer come loose before and stopping was not fun. I've since fixed that from happening again!

Definitely get a trailer with brakes!
It's not just safety (yours and mine) but you'll tow much more comfortably and not constantly going through brakes.

A trailer with brakes, or a trailer brake controller? Yes is the answer to both of course, but you should be clear what you’re looking for.

Definitely a trailer with brakes. I pull a 20' bass boat that's around 4000 lbs. I couldn't imagine trying to stop that baby loaded with fuel and gear without trailer brakes.

For what it’s worth, I tow a boat and trailer with a combined weight of about 2300 lbs comfortably with trailer surge brakes.

I would if me. I tow a 2,000 lb. boat and gear. I haven't electric brakes on the trailer but sometimes i wish there were. At 3k lbs towing imo would be real sketchy without some help.
