Rear differential fluid level.. how much?!

As said earlier you must look at your white driver door sticker. It will tell you the model. Than go to the chart to see which one applies to you. I have a 2016 OR and my model # was the 305l so it uses the 4 qts. The chart in the owners manual can be confusing at first.

 

Once again, I don't want to be the test lab after 50K.

 

So what viscosity is everyone normally going with? I read a few different ones on here. I will be changing mine this weekend

I just replaced my rear Differential fluid. Im way late in doing so at 26k....i know, shame on me.
There weren't a crazy amount of shavings on the magnetic plug, but the fluid reeked and it looked like metallic charcoal paint.

Anyways, I drive a '17 TRD Sport, 2wd, Automatic.
I used Lucas 75/90 synthetic.
It took 4 quarts to fill. maybe a tad more or less.

I also used a funnel I bought for 5 bucks from O'Reilly auto parts that worked awesome when re-filling the rear end.

You will need a 24mm socket. Large metric sizes aren't in everyones tool box, so thought I would mention that and save someone a headache.

here's pics for anyone who might be doing this for the first time....do it at around 5k for the first time....don't wait until 26k like I did.

 

I did mine at 4k miles. Both were under-filled by as much as 30% front and 20% rear. Went with Red Line

Regarding the study, you’ll always find Amsoil performing the best in their own studies. It’s definitely great oil, but what would be really great is if it wasn’t a multi level marketing company.

 

if it gets changed out at every 30k miles then use Walmart SUPERTECH

 

its just a marketing scheme the cheaper cost brand gear oils will perform just as well for 30k miles as do the high cost brands, AMSOIL are just trying to convince consumers that based on their scientific evaluations its better for you and your truck to pay at least twice as much money for their stuff, cause they know once the gullable hear that they start throwing money at them.

Its an interesting article and super official looking until I realized its written by Amsoil with a notary that anyone can do for 20 bucks.

75W-90 front and rear. Just rolled 35K miles last weekend and changed it again. I should've waited I think lol. Fluid looked almost brand new and my truck sees a lot of 80+ mph on Texas highways. Seems like this fluid did my diff good.

 

My fluid looked the same way. When I went to turn it into the recycle center and started pouring it out, I though I had mistakenly brought the new fluid instead of used. I had 35K.

It is starting to look like getting the break-in contamination out is a big deal.

My only worry is that I used Ravenol in the T case and now have the 2Lo Mod that I enjoy daily.

Yes, I do remember when I changed it at 5K miles, it was definitely darker and had some shimmer suspended in it, whereas it didnt this last time.

 

Holy crap! I got the same model # GRN30L-PRTSHA and was still confused on with the manual. I was literally uploading a picture of it to ask for help. The only defaults I can see is the matching 305L part (3.22) but that's not what you have stated above. Then that model number is not located in any of the starred (*) exceptions listed. So confusing. I only put 3qts in ATM but going back to buy another bottle or two to top it off. I'm guessing from what most people do, they just fill till it spills which probably doesn't do any harm?

 

That’s what I did, I filled it till it was coming out from the fill hole.
