so um....hybrid bike? that's such a strange/large category of bikes. are you wanting a front suspension? what kind of handlebar? what kind of trail riding are you looking for? if you want a city cruiser with upright handlebars, that'll do fine on just cruising around town but give it any uphill and you might struggle a bit. if you're looking for something to go on the singletracks, most hybrids are probably not what you're looking for.

    Things to look at:
Gearing...is it low enough range to help you up hills?
handlebars...is it upright (as in the handlebars rise so much you feel like you're on a cruiser) or flat (where you have to hunch down a little bit) or drop (where you drop down below the stem a la road bikes).
front suspension...yes/no. if you want front suspension, are you looking for really beefy?

for your price range, i'm sure yo'ull find something for the features you're looking for possibly but also, good luck with finding new bikes in general. most everyone is sold out. :/

I understand that is a broad term, I just don't really know what I want/need. I know I need to put in some research, but I figured I'd ask here. But thanks for the help!

yeah. IMO, those three criteria should help you narrow it down a little bit more. good luck!

You're also probably gonna want to look at places like trek, giant, specialized. bigger manufacturers who make them. Jamis also makes some general purpose bikes.

lots of us here have great knowledge and willing to share it, but you didn’t give us much to go off of. In the 700-900 range, you’re looking at dept store bikes or commuter bikes at an LBS. You could also go used and check that market, but the prices are pretty high right now with high demand (because everyone is sold out). Most new bikes in that price range will not be easy to upgrade, and if you did upgrade, and then got a new frame down the line, you probably couldn’t use those upgraded parts on the new frame. It’s just the shenanigans of the bike industry. Figure out exactly what you are looking for and a price range, and we will do our best to send you in the right direction.

That's definitely an awesome bike and probably should be in the same category with it's unique 125mm/140mm setup, but I'm currently limiting the list to only those with suspension at both ends between 115mm and 130mm. If I open it up to all of the 130/140mm options that are out there, the size of the list would probably double. That's not to say that the Optic isn't very similar, but it may not be fair to directly compare it to 115/120mm setups.

As @Bannerman said, the lines are getting extremely blurry between categories, so I had to draw some lines somewhere... I guess? lol :notsure:

Better redraw the lines. Smuggler, Pivot and I’m sure others are 140 up front.

edit: 140 is an option on the Pivot but you get the idea.

Yeah easiest to draw the lines based on rear travel IMO. A 120/130 bike isn’t going to ride much different than a 120/140 bike all else equal.
