Hi all. New to the forum. I’ve been looking around at lots of posts about vinyl wrapping... I’m intrigued because I have a nautical blue 2012 model with horrendous hood and roof paint. The rest of the truck is great. That all being said, I only need to wrap the hood and roof to give it a facelift. I can’t decide what to wrap it in. Carbon? Flat black? Brushed aluminum? Or the closest blue match? Any suggestions out there? Thanks.

Literally going through the exact same process right now with my Indigo Ink 08. I will probably end up just going with satin black but I'm still toying around with some color choices.

I’ve seen several with the hood and roof in flat/satin black. Looks pretty good.

I'd say satin black as well.

Brushed aluminum will blind you with sun reflection, blue may not match perfectly & drive you crazy.

You do all realize that satin black is almost the perfect 'black body' from a physics standpoint? Your hood clear coat is cooked out by the sun. That satin black surface will absorb a massive amount of radiant thermal energy (sun light), even worse than gloss black. In layman's terms, it will be extremely hot.

Your post immediately following the showing of said vinyl application will be something along the lines of, "How do I make my A/C work better??"

    Carry on.

P.S. My vote would be for a blue that closely matches your current color. Keep in mind, I'm kind of old so I choose function over aesthetics.

I recently wrapped my roof satin black. I have a similar color to you, Blue Ribbon Metallic. If you live in a place with a lot of sun, like where I am in Hawaii, I think the recommended vinyl wrap life span for horizontal surfaces is 1 year. That said, I went with satin black because I assumed that whatever available blue that closely matched my paint still wouldn't match and would probably look more off than just having it satin black. That's just my opinion. I don't feel the cab being any hotter than is was previously with the wrap.

Just a note on life span of a wrap,

I have had my rig wrapped going on year 4 now in matte black. Still looks great imo, but I never wash it. The wrap that is. I wash the underside of my rig to keep it clean and to be able to inspect it.

I live in northern ontario canada, so we dont get a ton of sun. But we do get 5 to 6 months of winter with temps as cold as -40C(F). I never thought it would last this long tbh. I use it as a 'bush wrap' so it pretty much protects my stock paint a bit from all the bush love. It has held up amazing in that aspect as well, not 1 rip or tear.

DIY the roof in white Monstaliner and have the hood professionally painted in the OE blue.

I'd really like to wrap my whole truck one day. I could really use a bush wrap. I think where you are you'd be good for a few more years.

l personally love satin black look. But black absorbs heat much more than lighter colors do. l wonder if that affect the lifespan of the wrap itself? I'd find that out first, and if it does work that into your budget.
But ultimately go with the colour that you personally like best. You'll be the one looking at it every single day.
The wrong colour will just piss you off over time.

Fun fact, -40 is the same, whether the scale is celsius or fahrenheit

I'd go gloss silver for roof, gloss blue to match on the hood.

I have a 2014 I bought back in 2017, I noticed a small blotch on my hood about a month after I brought it home, while waxing/detailing my truck. Itried buffing it out ,but no luck, the truck is black, I thought about what i could do, besides repaint, Then it occured to me I could wrapped just the hood, I thought the carbon fiber or maybe the new/modern digital camo ,if they have it available would look cool. most of the interior mods(seat covers, shift knob) i've done are carbon fiber! so I when this whole Quarrantine madness is over, I want to wrapped the hood too. I figure it will help protect against bugs & rocks too!
