    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

I'm looking to head up to Eagle Peak, and maybe ride around in the Herring Creek area.

    Hey Uphillshunter,

FYI according to the Stanislaus National Forest Order STF-16-2020-10 FR 4N12 (Herring Creek Road) is closed until June 30th, 2020 from the intersection of 18EV463, continuing in a north easterly direction, then circling back to the south, then west, until 4N12 intersects with itself.
Here is a link to the forest order with a map of the closed roads highlighted: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd748219.pdf

How difficult is FR 5N74 and FR 4N12 to Eagle Peak? I have a stock 2019 TRDOR DCLB and I am planning on some dispersed camping on Long Valley Creek in early July if the rest of 5N01 opens up past the horse camp as scheduled on June 30th. I watched these two videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOkFHorUsNo and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAueIeG_XNY and neither looked too bad, but looks can be deceiving.

Thanks for the FYI. But according to that Forest Order 5N01 is still supposed to be closed... That is not the case. We were all the way back 5N01 to the Niagara Rim trail head... the amount of traffic headed in and out past the trail head led me to believe it was open the rest of the way. And I spoke to a guy on a motorcycle that said he was camping back in Long Valley over the weekend.

There was also, a lot of traffic in and out of Herring Creek road, and the gate was open off 108.

I've never been to Eagle Peak (the main reason I want to go up there)... But from all the info I have heard and seen on the roads up there, I don't see any reason a stock Off Road can't make it up there. I have been back most of Long Valley and we had to turn around (last time I was back there was before my truck was 4wd). I think the far back end of Long Valley is probably more challenging than going to Eagle Peak.

    Uphillshunter,

Well if it is all open that is great news. I went up to scope out 5N01 for a day trip on June 14th and the gate on 5N01 just before the horse camp at the Eagle Creek crossing was locked. I'm planning on July 9-12 for a long weekend camping and hopefully if it isn't open now it will be by then.

It should definately be good to go for you by mid July. Either way. Even if I can't get in Herring Creek and Eagle Peak... If I'm up there, I have places I can go and make it a full day

The hardest part of long valley is just a super deep wash you have to cross. I don’t think you can go much further than just after that. I remember hearing that you used to be able to drive further back but they closed it all off. Same with Relief Reservoir, you used to be able to drive down the creek all the way to the water but they fenced it off and it’s all overgrown now.

    Sharkfrog,

Are you talking about where 5N01 crosses Long Valley Creek, just before 5N01A turns off to the right to follow the creek? After that it looks like 5N01A follows the creek until it turns into 20EV220.

I've been doing recon on the forest service interactive OHV map:
https://www.fs.fed.us/ivm/ and Google earth. I used Avenza Maps with the free OHV maps and Forest Service Quad Maps, and I have the paper OHV maps too.

I remember going there camping as a kid in a first gen 4Runner and an old boat trailer turned into a flatbed camping trailer that sort of floated across the creek a bit. I'm hoping to bring the tent trailer to keep the wife comfortable. If I can't make the crossing with the trailer then I'll camp somewhere before it on 5N01 and just drive down the valley and explore what I can.

I don't think he's talking about right where it turns off of main 5N01. The road goes quite a ways back down in to Long Valley. I know where he's tslking about, where the creek cut the road pretty bad. There are a few whoop dee doos before you get to where the creek cut the road. We turned around there. My truck was 2wd, and we had a hitch basket that was dragging on the whoops... so we turned around.

GF wants to "get out" on the 4th of July. I told her all the lakes would probably be packed. So I was thinking about a drive up that way to explore, hopefully find a creek or something to jump in, have a picnic or some shit.

Yeah, from what I can see on the Google Earth photo from last August, the washed out small creek crossings are past where I am hoping to camp. Thanks for the heads up though guys.

The wash out I'm talking about is further back... those are pretty much the whoop de doos.

The bad wash has a large tree next to it.
