What “switch” did you hit with your knee that caused a brake failure?

Beyond that the Tacoma is marginal for towing a 5000+ load, no matter how many parts you throw at it. Time for a bigger truck or a smaller trailer.

Brakes were probably smoking from all the assembly lubes and stuff burning off. Still, get a bigger truck and be done.

Probably 10k pounds on brakes that are designed for a 4k pound truck, what do you expect? And yes a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton is better for towing. I wouldn't put more than a couple quads or a <20ft boat behind mine.

That's too much weight but you should be able to feel your trailers brakes working try sliding the controler control manually then adjust the controller to apply more breaking it razes the voltage to the trailer brakes. You can try pulling the brake away cable it should lock the trailer brakes DO Not leave the pin out for more than 20 sec or so you run a risk of cooking something.

OP, Maybe consider changing thread title to something more like:

I use to pull my 2 place triton enclosed snowmobile trailer, and 2,000 lb boat, and gear with my gen1 v8 tundra which was no problem while getting 14 mpg highway. Got a new v6 tacoma auto now trying to do the same load...its quite a difference, with this truck you always can feel the weight back there your pulling. Imo, i don't even know if i'd even want to tow 3,000 lbs too many times.

Sounds like a lot of user error here between buying the wrong truck and putting your brake controller in a dumb spot. Not trying to pick a fight but you can't blame the truck when you're pushing it at it's limits. Also if your trailer brakes go out learn to downshift.

Why stop at the tundra, get a 1 ton diesel, tow what ever you want, profit.

That’s way too much weight for normal towing dude! You are asking for problems and expense over time. My trailer weighs 3500lbs dry/4200ish with gear, I would not want more for mountainous/hilly trips. A full-size, or a lighter trailer is your best option. Even with upgraded brakes, airbags and a very hi-end tow and sway control setup (which I have)

I too have OVtune, gears, etc. Still wouldn’t want to have more than 3500/4500lbs with gear, Max.

Do I want a full-size? Eventually, for more reasons than one.

Will I get rid of my Tacoma. Hell no.
