So I’m waiting for delivery of my 2019 Pro and I’m considering having the dealer install the OEM roof rack. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts and or experiences with it.

I know most people go for the prinsu, but I’m really just looking at a rack and cross cars to mount my canoe. I’ve looked at the cross bars from Thule and Yakima but I don’t like how the mount on the truck.

    Thanks.

I was considering same but can't help but wonder if they promote roof leaks.
You hear quite a few complaints of Tacoma water leaks, wonder if many of these have the roof racks?

Hmmmm I never thought if that. Possible leaks from an aftermarket rack may be a problem but I figured if I got the dealership to install it. I’d be ok.

If you don't want to drill, your only option is the kind that clamp onto the door jambs.

Edit - not sure if OEM requires drilling versus tapping into existing threaded holes.

My 2019 Pro came with the OEM rack. Granted it was probably installed by the factory or at the port but it’s been in several storms with no leaks. I currently have the crossbars stored parallel for wind noise. I wasn’t sure I’d like it at first but the fact that you can swing the crossbars in/out is pretty cool. Now I feel like Tacoma’s look naked without a roof rack.

Unfortunately mine doesn’t have it installed from the factory and I’d have to get it installed at the dealership. Now all this talk about leaks has me worried

I'm sure leaks are the exception, not the norm. If it's installed properly with the proper sealant, it'll be fine.

Wouldn’t the dealer warranty the install? I’d let my dealer install mine without concern.

Yep you take off the rubber strip on the roof and there are mounting holes in the top of the cab on the double cab. OEM and aftermarket racks all use these.

Just silicone them well and you wont have any leaks

Yeah just caulk the holes. Can't imagine leaking being a problem if you put a little effort into it.

I am currently in the process of researching roof racks. There are a number that are talked about and debated widely on these very helpful forums -- the OEM roof rack, the Prinsu, the Victory, etc. It does feel like the Prinsu is the "forum favorite."

I am leaning toward the OEM roof rack and installing it myself. There are ton of videos on how to install. Here is an example:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLd7Elu2FjM

Honestly, I would not be overly concerned about leaking. Yes, there have been folks here who have had that problem -- you can search the forums and find that out. But my guess is that there are thousands of these roof racks installed and the leaking is a very small percentage of those installs.

Check out the videos and you will get a really good idea as to what is entailed on the install. Keep in mind, Toyota designed the roof to accommodate the rack so that might help assuage your fear a little.

Best of luck to you !

I picked up my oem roof rack from the dealer when they were having a good sale. I haven't had any issue's with leaks and the install was super easy, took me about 20 minutes. truck.jpg

I installed the OEM roof rack on my truck about a week or two after i purchased the truck, i used silicone in every bolt, torque to specs, and have had zero issues to date.. The install process is pretty easy not much to it.. The dealership will charge you an arm and a leg..

Thanks everyone your replies. I’ll let the dealership install the rack and make sure to ask them to silicone the holes. If anything happens I’m sure they will fix it.
