I don't know just how effective the sound of racking a shotgun is. Never did it myself to see the result. But, about 30 years ago I had cut down a large cactus. It was piled in the backyard awaiting disposal. The sound of someone trying to get into my shed awoke me. I looked out the window, saw the miscreant and yelled at him. He started to run, and just for fun I let the bolt go home, chambering a round in my semi auto shotgun. Poor kid tried so hard to stop he fell face forward into the cactus. I was laughing so hard I couldn't have fired that thing if I wanted to.

 

you know what else scares away intruders?

any noise. if they're in your house and it wasn't strong through the front door or garage, it's probably not a violent home invasion anyway

turning on a light will scare most burglars away. and if you played a recording of random noises with a shotgun slide thrown in that playlist, barely anyone will identify that sound for what it is

 

Kinda my point. That’s not to take away from anyone laying in wait down the hall with a .50 or ballista. Just not in my defensive plan.

long time ago, staying at a girlfriends house, had a party, everyone left, except me (she wanted to fuck). the fire in the backyard was still going, some randos from the neighborhood came over and sat next to the fire with some beers

girlfriend got freaked, "there's someone in the backyard, i don't know them"

i'm not sure if they got upset that i was naked and had a massive erection, or if it was the pistol i was carrying

The fact you pointed out that she “wanted to fuck,” leads me to believe you were totally friend zoned and only there because she was scared.
