Google can't track you everywhere if you have a GPS.

Same here. We use it more and more for Search and Rescue; getting away from Garmin, even though we have Garmin Overlanders in our jeeps. They ARE nice, but expensive! (Both the Jeeps and the Overlanders, haha)
We have a group account, which makes it possible to share tracks and waypoints on the fly with command. But of course that does require a signal.

Also, Gaia GPS is under very active development and has a tremendously helpful support staff and community.

 

So you have the overlander from Garmin? I know it's expensive, but how is it worth it? I really like the use of the overlanderPOI's and it seems to have alot of benefits for finding and navigating offroad trails? But you are saying that GAIA is comprable?

 

It's in our SAR vehicles, mainly because of the display size and because we can link it to the Garmin InReach. That makes using the InReach for messaging much easier. It's also much easier to use the Radio with one hand and the Overlander tablet with the other than to fiddle with a phone and the radio. We recently got a sizable grant, so could afford it.
I wouldn't get it for personal use though. For price/performance Gaia GPS wins hands down IMO.There are no maps available from Garmin that you wouldn't find an equivalent, and sometimes better, for Gaia.
The overlander has some goodies like vehicle tilt / inclination display but as far as I can tell it really is just a car GPS combined with handheld GPS functionallity.

 

Great to know. I dont need pitch and roll because it is already on the 2020 OR. Seems like if anything, I should pick up a handheld device for when I am hiking/snowboarding places with no cell coverage.

 

Gaia with car play has been great for me. I also carry a Garmin inreach explorer+ but more for emergencies when mtn biking, backpacking, exploring etc while without cell service.

I've actually used my phone with Gaia and downloaded maps for 3 day hiking trips. Just put it in airplane mode, keep the display turned off when you're not using it, disable all battery hungry services like voice recognition and turn it off for the night. I was still at 40% battery after 3 days, but made sure I only used the phone for position checks / orientation. One advantage over any handheld GPS that I am aware of is that the display quality, especially for satellite maps, is vastly better. A big disadvantage is that it sucks in the rain.

 

Haha, yea the rain would eat a phone alive depending how hard its raining. I am also worried about snow when I riding in the back country! i feel a handheld would be more suitable than my phone.

 

Exactly. That's why I'll be holding on to my Etrex 30 from 2011 with non-touch display forever. I don't think it knows how to die.
