Why does the audio suck in the 3rd gen? (Solved)

@soggyBottom, how'd you get those tweeters to fit in the sail panels? I tried using the pivot mounts and could not get them to fit. I originally had them flush mounted, but the sail panels would not go back on since there's basically 0 room between the sail panels and the door frame. They're currently sticking out till I found out an alternative solution...

I've been very happy with the Kappa 90CSX 3-way setup with the 20MXs so far...

Because panel is rounded, it's difficult.

I used CA glue with an accelerator which sort of bent the panel to be flat. It's not perfect but if you make it flat from your view angle, you won't see it at all.

To clarify what I mean, tilt the tweeter to it's flush from your point of view.

 

I used the surface mount cups that came with the JBL/Infinity speakers, then I hot glued them to the backside and used a heat gun to slightly bend the sail panel outward to fit.

 

Strangely update 0101A1 has changed the sound quality of the stock premium non-jbl stereo on mine substantially.
-Bass is no longer flat (though it still can’t quite rattle the mirrors)
-I’m also hearing melodies in songs i never used to in this truck.
-phone call quality dropped substantially

**EDIT: removing my phone from the tacoma & adding it again after the update fixed the call quality.

 

I like the heat gun idea better. I don't know why I didn't think of that.

@soggyBottom, so yeah, I used a heat gun to mold the panel to where the tweeter mounts sit flush, but the threaded body behind the sail panel sticks out so much that the sail panel won't clip back in, so I had to unscrew it enough to where I had room on the back of the sail panel so it would clip, and now of course it sits out. Are you saying you bent the panel out enough to where that wasn't an issue? Do you happen to have a pic of the back of your sail panel?

 

@5nahalf, I may end up buying new sail panels and doing this instead, but I figured the pivot mounts would be better so I could position the tweeters pointed more towards be for better staging.

 

Here's what I'm running into... I can screw in the body to sit flush with the panel, but then the threaded body sticks out in the rear beyond the back of the panel, and then the panel won't clip in...

Yeah, thats the issue I was running into when I first went to install my tweeters. I measured the clearance and there just wasnt enough.

You could try trimming the backside of the tweeter cup, but your limited due to that adjustment screw. Though you could adjust them to where you want them, then superglue the cups together. Then you can cut off the back half of the cup (where the adjustment screw is) till it fits.
It will either fit and work perfect, or you will of destroyed the cups that didnt fit anyways.

 

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea, I think I'll try that next, thanks! I was originally thinking of cutting off the back of the threaded body that sticks out, but like you mentioned, the cup portion where the ball attaches is mounted towards the back of the threaded body.

I'm still curious how @soggyBottom got it to work...

 

Its worth a try, and if doesnt work and you still want to use those style cups. I can mail you mine for the cost of shipping.

I tucked all 4 of them behind the head unit. I've had them there for about 2 months now without issue.

 

Interesting, I didn't think about that. I've got mine tucked under the center stack on either side.
