Curious if people are running rooftop tents on stock suspension on their TRD Off-Roads or putting an AAL in to accommodate the added constant weight. Girlfriend is pushing me to get a rooftop tent and I want to make sure I'm taking everything into account.

Aal will work but some will say stiff when no weight. Also you could do 3 Leaf aal. Just a thought. I personally run Wheelers aal it’s fine for me.
    Good luck

I assume the rear would sag a bit with the tent on. Are you going to keep it on the truck all the time? If so I’d probably get an AAL or even a new leaf pack. You could probably get by without one tho. Personally I just bought HD Dakars for when I get a RTT but im also lifted.

RTT weights 100-200 lbs generally, depending on what size RTT you get. That plus any extra weight of camping gear, recovery gear, a bed rack or bars, etc etc that you might carry. A stock truck can take a basic setup no problem, but it might look saggy in the rear end while loaded up.

My advice has always been to start simple and try it out. No need to build an instagram mall-crawler superbro-build, only to find out you guys dont really like it.. If you do like it and go more often, then yeah you'll want to start looking into AAL or even a brand new leaf pack.

She's been very happy ever since I traded in my F-150 and bought a Tacoma. She's even willing to pay for the RTT! I'm perfectly happy camping in a tent on the ground, but if gets her more excited to get out and she wants to pay for it I'm all in.

Probably won't have it on all the time. Truck is a daily and I can always use a good workout to put it back on the truck every other week or so.

This is exactly what I was hoping someone would say. I'm not one for buying stuff without knowing I'm going to be using it consistently. Appreciate the advice.

Are you planning on lifting it? Do you wheel hard with it? I had an RTT on mine before lift. It was fine for the time I did it. It will sag a bit.

I'm not planning on lifting for a couple more years. Waiting until the stock suspension gives out and then I'll probably put a small lift on it. I don't do any hard wheeling right now since I have no armor, but I do more than just forest service roads.

I have topper plus RTT. When I loaded up the bed with camping gear it sagged and bottomed out on rough trails. I got helper springs. Pretty cheap solution but I still plan on getting Dakar springs with AAL.

You can probably run 5100s all around with a med pack probably under $1100.

Haha yes I am much happier. This truck is more suited to my lifestyle right now. Girlfriend, dog, no kids, don't need to tow anything. Didn't need a full size and the Tacoma is just more fun. I grew up with Fords in my family so there is always a soft spot for them.

I just posted something similar last night. Bed rack, rtt, and bed loaded with camping crap and my stock OR suspension sags to the point the leafs are compressed a bit past parallel to the ground. It's like a leveling kit in the wrong direction. Apparently not super great for the suspension

Did you end up biting the bullet and buying a new suspension?

Ehhh it's in the works lol. I figure the worst thing that happens is the rear leafs go bad from being constantly compressed. When that goes real bad, then I will lift it. Hard for me to justify right now, as all the trails I've been on I can either bypass or slide on some steel to get through.

Well if thats the case, than OP needs to beef up the rear suspension for sure.
