Just getting my 2018 serviced at the dealer and the sales guy says that “Toyota is keeping it quiet but they changed something to make the transmission better” and claimed his 2020 was way better than his earlier 3rd gen. When I asked what was changed he said he didn’t know but I responded with “if it’s different the guys on TW will know”.

anyone know of physical changes to the tranny?

No, just programming other than maybe a few superseded parts but the real issues have always been the shift logic and lethargic top gearing due to the rear end.

They didn't have any to sell, here in Utah the dealer lot was spooky it had so few trucks, and SUV's.

I even asked him if it was software or physical change and he said it was physically different but I'll chalk it up to Salesmen BS.

I don't trust salesmen, I haven't met one yet that knew anything about the vehicle outside of whats on the sticker.

Also I have the ATF cooler on mine.

This is very true, even a modestly educated consumer is more knowledgeable than a salesman. I know several technicians whose opinion I highly value.

There's a definite difference compared to the way my buddies 2019 trd v6 auto works compared to my 2020. My transmission senses, and does quicker up, and downshifts compared to how lazy his acts on the same hills. I especially notice the difference when letting off the gas around a very slow corner when in town...his transmission acts like its stuck in neutral in the turn before it picks the correct gear. Mine is very fluid through the same corner shifting like a transmission should be.

You have a new truck too few miles, it’s learning your driving style. Wait a few thousand miles . Tire size also matters. Driven a 2020 with 6000 miles , drives the same as mine . Same tire size.

You might have something with the larger tires....he installed these 33'' aggressive mud tires on his trd with a lift. I kept the same dia. tires on my truck only wider than stock. Geez i hope your wrong about how the transmission acts with more mileage...its just fine now.

Keep in mind weight of the tires not just diameter, 33" aggressive mud tires could be 50% heavier than stock.

    Went from a 2017 V6/Auto 4X4 to a 2020 V6/Auto 4X4. I definitely notice the difference. No lagging in town and upshift/downshifts less erratic.

Yeah i've already brought it up, but this guys got the macho mentality with his truck and plenty of saturdays to make it as bad as to the public he can. Looks are more important.
