Anybody Test Drive a 2011 2.7 4x4 auto AND manual?

    Wondering if anyone had had the chance to test drive BOTH the manual and automatic transmission options for the 4cyl with 4x4. I've been reading last night for a couple hours on the forums but couldn't find anyone who did.

    I'm not interested in the 6 as I'm not towing or carrying heavy loads. I have test drove a 2010 Access Cab 4x4 SR5 2.7l engine and it's not by any means fast off the line (at least entering the highway) but in the city it's fine.

    I would test drive the auto but no dealers in my area have one in stock.

    Wondering if the auto is slower than the manual in 0-60.

    well, the motor is the same either way, so it shouldnt be slower or faster. it all depends on how well/fast you can shift.

    Sure, in manual it depends on how you shift but with an auto you don't have control hence I want to find out if there is a big difference between the two.

    again, if you shift like ass and dont know what you are doing, the auto will be faster. if you are a professional race car driver and perfect at it, itll be pretty close. the motor is the same in both vehicles, so one is not faster than the other.

    they are 2 different things, you cant really compare them. it depends too much on driver error.

    One motor would't be faster than another, however the power to the wheels will be different since an automatic transmission is less efficient in power transfer.

    If your biggest concern is speed, then you should not be considering a 4cyl, get a 6. I have a 4cyl 2WD access cab with automatic. It goes just fine, I am not winning any races, but if I wanted to, I would buy a sporty vehicle.

    Do you normally shift at 5,500 RPMs? If not, the Auto should be pretty close to the Manual shifted at appropriate RPMs.

    Pedal to the metal 0-60? Depends, are you a speed shifter or slow as molasses? Auto will obviously shift gears for you, but if you shifted (efficiently) at the same RPMs [in a manual] the difference would be negligible.

    I don't think he ever mentioned that.

    The 2.7 gets alot more life once it gets broken in.

    Don't know about California, but I have a 4x4 reg cab manual, maybe the engine choice makes a difference? Mine is 4 cyl.

    Yup, it used to only be manual, same with the 4 cyl. prerunner, then they went and ruined with auto only for 2011. Very disappointing.

    Thanks for the responses so far.

    Up in Canada you can still get the 4cyl manual as well as the auto both with the 4x4 and the 2wd. We can't get the regular cab or the prerunner.

    Don't plan on any high rpm shifts. Again, I don't need the 6 cyl - I only want to know if there is a difference between the 4cyl auto and manual. The manual is the lowest I would want to go - I don;t want the auto to be worst.

    I test drove both a manual 2010 4cylinder 4x4 access cab, and an auto 4cylinder 4x4 access cab. Performance wise I would go with the manual, that's what I did. The ability to hold gears comes in handy on a daily basis for me, and I am a pretty conservative driver. Also, if you ever plan on having decent acceleration to pass, you will need the manual. I don't know if it is actually any slower than the auto, but I would not want this heavy of a truck with an auto 4cylinder

    Also, The 5-speed will drive you nuts until you get used to it, especially if you are used to shifting a car. But I thought it was the way to go.

    pulled this from the OP, when someone mentions both fast off the line and then is concerned about the 0-60 differences, I think they are considering speed a major factor. I could be wrong though.

    which tranny is stronger? If I buy a taco I plan to turbo it when the car gets older. I know this is much later in the future but something I want to think about before consider buying. So which tranny will hold about 350-400whp better. Also which tranny do you think will perform better at the drag strip? Something I wanna do for fun every now and then.

    Sorry for asking these questions but I am not familar with trucks and heard that your not suppose to shift these things like sports cars. If it was like a 350z or something the answer would be more clear, the manual tranny for performance.

    4.56 gears, rear trutrac,DT header, 235/85r16 Duratracs, 2nd filter pulled, inter.wipers, Cruise control, Factory alum. whls/winter tires(2nd set), Afe pro Dry-S , Dumbo eared flaps cut down.
    Try searching for 2011 specifications or something , i found a spec sheet here linked in another thread that showed the new auto at 2 seconds slower 0-60sec based on reg cab/4wd . Considering the topic i dont find that as bad , just a statistic.

    To make it clear, my interest is only in the 4 cylinder. I have test driven the manual which is fine for me but all things the same would prefer and auto. What I'm concerned with is if the auto has signifcantly worst performance compared to the manual.
