A used 2017 or 2018 TRD Pro?

Hi Tacoma Owners,

Maybe the forum can shed light on a potential purchase , a 2017 vehicle is on hold for a day or two.

Theres a used 2017 Pro in Cement with 40K miles and asking 33K without new tires or 34K with new tires. All in is 36.5K with taxes however I would need to ship from Illinois to California which adds 2K.

37.5K shipping no tires.
38.5K shipping + tires.

My issue is should I wait for a 2018 Pro in Cement to come on the market because its has additional safety features, lane merge warning, cross traffic warning and a few more I think.

Does the 2018 warrant waiting and purchasing if I'm going to keep this Tacoma for a very long time. Would a 2018 hold its value more that a 2017 without safety features?
The 2017 doesnt have running boards so that adds another $250-$300.

I think cement Pros come and go quickly on the 2ndary market. Someone please shed some light. The last Toyota I had was a 1995 4Runner so Ive been unfamiliar with the truck scene for awhile now.

 

How tall are you? I sit high and hate the pre-collision camera above the mirror.

I love the safety sense in my wifes rav4, but not a huge fan in the trucks so far.

 

The lane “assist” is garbage. It doesn’t do anything but beep when it thinks you’re going over the line and even then you won’t hear it if you have your radio turned up to a moderate amount or have windows down.
The auto cruise isn’t too bad. Although it seems like it’s all gas or all brakes when traffic fluctuates. Of course it’s completely useless at stopping the vehicle and driving under 30mph. Also the auto high beams seem a bit useless, too. I don’t even have them on. But then again with all the extra lighting I have on front, I don’t really even need them.

all in all, I would still get the 18.

 

I'm the opposite. I prefer my Tacoma's to my wife's 2015 Highlander. Seems like they've smoothed some things out in 4 years.

@FranksandBeans - you'll have to decide if the features the 2018 has are important to you. We can't make that decision.

 

Wouldn't it be cheaper to get a one way flight and drive it home?

 

The Pros carry allot of features without benefit to most drivers.

Lets take your figure of $34k plus $2k shipping.

I bet you could get a 2020 OR locally for less than $34k.

The only reason I mention this is that the $2k shipping really sours your deal. Unless there is some pressing urgent need I think you take a pass until you find one locally.

LOL. I forgot about all the lighting up front. This could sway me towards a 2018 as this would be future proof as well. Okay so the lane assist is garbage I can see this front collision may be useful, all those speeding city drivers. Any way to turn off the beeping?

 

Yes. That 2K shipping is a real killer. Finding locally in Bay Area is difficult, however I haven't considered going to a dealer yet, maybe during COVID times may be a good time to visit one.
It is a bitter 2K in my mouth.

I'm surprised no one has said this yet, but the 2018 Pro didn't come in Cement. If Cement is your gotta have it color and you want a Pro, you're limited to the 2017. In 2018 Cement was available on the TRD Off-Road and Sport, but not the Pro. (I don't recall if you could get it on the SR/SR5 models, so don't hold me to that).

This is similar to how in 2019 you could get Calvary Blue on the lower trim trucks and in 2020 you can get Voodoo Blue on the lower trim trucks.

 

The ORs have all the same stuff as the Pros except maybe a hood scoop and Fox shocks. Of which the shocks are mildly tuned as is. If he’s going to lift anyway, he would be better off getting the OR. No ridiculous badge “tax” (markup solely because it’s a Pro) and he gets the 4WD goodies. Not to mention there are lot more ORa than apros

you turn the lane assist off altogether via steering wheel control.

Although an important item of note:
With the radar cruise, it cannot be selectively turned off. Meaning if you get debris or ice buildup on the front sensor (especially during winter) the truck will not engage cruise at all. As in you can’t just run regular cruise.

 

Tacoma's may be one of the only vehicles cheaper to get from a dealer. I know I would not sell mine for what a dealer would let you have it.

Yes, it would but I have commitments near home base, that vehicle will be on hold for until tomorrow or 2 days at most.

 

Understand. You gotta do what's best for you. Good luck either way with whichever truck you decide on.

I paid less for a fully loaded 2019 OR brand new.

 

I bought my 2016 from a dealer in GA and shipped to CA. It was a reputable transport company though I think he did knock the bed light on and drain the battery which seemed a little bit of a silly mistake. Cost me $700 cash. Have you shopped around on transportation?

 

I'm going to do this in the morning. 2 K is steep.

 

Just get the 2020 pro
