Valvoline Instant Oil Change told me my cheapest option was $68.99. Were they trying to rip me off?

It's for the motorcycles. Merely agreeing that synthetic is not expensive

I’m sure they make a commission incentive on top of hourly wage. They’re not in the business of being the cheapest option, that’s what vehicle owners are.

Like others have said, it’s a quick job with minimal expense if you want the cheapest. Otherwise not sure how being told the price up front can be construed as ripped off.

You went for a service, declined to pay what it costs. Not ripped off in any sense.

I’ll try to explain this the simplest way I can.

A lot of 0w-20 vehicles have longer OCI. (Oil Change Interval)
In the 2.7 Tacoma, it’s 10k miles. Which is 2x as long as the 5w-30 4.0 truck.

Jiffy Lube is a business. They are a for profit business.
There for, 10k OCI is 2x less money than “stand” oil guys.
(And Yes, Synthetic Oil is a little more expensive)

I do how ever believe that the price you were given is “High” even for a 0w-20 Synthetic Oil Change.

FWIW, Free Service Tire did my truck (5w-30 regular oil) for ~ $24.00

That's about what I remember the pricing being when I worked there nearly twenty years ago. Maybe it was as low as $62.99.

I paid $19.97 for 6 quarts of Chevron Havoline ProDS Full Synthetic and $6.97 for an OEM Toyota YZZD3 filter - all from Walmart with 2 day shipping to my door.

The 6-pack of 805 was less than $10.

It takes 30 minutes And basic tools.

Most places I’ve seen have base pricing on 5 quarts and then bend you over for any extra quarts needed. Dealer wanted $70 for conventional.

    At my shop..

    - 5 qt conventional oil change is around 65$,

    - 5 qt synthetic (0w-20) is around 85-90$

Cars that require a more than 5 qts cost more obviously, german cars that require more proprietary oil cost more.
Bmw/Mercedes/VW/Porsche routinely run upwards of 110-120$

Depends on what you mean. For someone who can do their own....sure. You can get a 5 quart jug of 0/20 SuperTech for less than $20 and a filter for another $7.

But having a shop do it? Well, that's a different story. They have employees to pay, overhead to contend with, building leases/mortgages, etc. Definitely not unreasonable
